Blown Detroit Engine
#1

I have a 1980 that originally had a Cat engine. It was replaced with a Detroit 8v71 I believe. I loaned the rv to a friend of mine who doesn’t watch his gauges. It overheated in spectacular fashion. So sad because the Detroit had very low miles. Now I’m deciding what to replace it with since it got so hot it’s not rebuildable. I own a wrecked Van Hool with a good series 60. Any advice here would be appreciated. It looks like the 60 would fit but maybe I’m better off buying something else.

The 60 will fit with some body mods I would think. The ECM wiring would get me. Were it mine I'd find a 6v92 and be gone. A few more ponies than the 8v71, but with a turbo so better at elevation. We put one in place of the 8v71 in our MC8. I love the thing. Pulled the stacker around MT., Wy., CO., and Id. few yr ago. Had a great time. Until a few months ago I had a spare 6v92, but it went to a new home in Mt. Love the sound of the 2 strokes.

I think you will find it much easier to install a V configured engine. The series 60 required a side mount radiator. I believe a higher final drive ratio is preferred as well. Marks suggestion of a 6v-92T is right on.

Thank you both for the great advice! I like this idea. Now I'm on the hunt for a 6v-92T.

My Newell has a 8V-92 . I’m considering the feasibility / benefits of installing seperate temp sensors for each bank. I’ve heard that the factory gauge only reads one bank.

on my 90 i put temp sensors on each bank. there are plenty of plugs to do it. then i ran it to a dual digital gauge in the front.
