Somewhere between 5 and 6 gallons. Use the allison 4 inch deep sump high capacity filters. Make SURE you get allison filters, lots of knockoffs on the internet. motor coach technician has an excellent youtube video on this topic

I watched the video. It was very informative.
Allison numbers appear to be 29558329??
Next question is can I mix transynd with whatever fluid is in there??

Yes, Transynd is backwards compatible. The only thing to note is that you are going to have a mix of fluids since you will not be getting all the fluid out. Generally they claim that after about 3 or 4 changes you should have full strength transynd for reference. Its not necessary to change it to get all the old fluid out unless you just want to.

Ok great. I’m hoping to get all the fluids and filters in the motor and generator this weekend

Fluid is kind of a goldfish color like motor oil with a hint of red. Didn’t smell real burnt. I put 2 quarts in and checked it again and it said it was ok
Continued on the trip and the trans temp parked at like 221 for most of the trip. Got up to as high as 227 on mostly flat roads
No “trans temp” or “trans stop” lights ever lit up but these temps seem to be higher than everything I’m reading. I am towing a 5k pound vehicle but whopdie do.
Last year I ran it with the fan unplugged and it never got above 205 on the BlueFire.
I did open the hatch and took some readings with the IR gun from what I think is the trans cooler (pictures attached)
I’m going to change the fluid and filters. Can anyone tell me the filters numbers and transyd quantity?? I guess I’ll start there unless someone has a better idea
Doing my filters this weekend. What do you guys think of my in and out of the cooler temps??

In and out cooler temps don’t look accurate. Spray the two metal elbows with flat black paint. Silver and white are the worst colors for reading infrared. Flat black is best.
Also shoot a known temp with that gun. A boiling pot of water is sure to be 212.

I took it on about a 2 hour shake down today about 10 degrees cooler ambient temp. Halfway I checked the tranny fluid and it was 4 quarts low so I added that and continued on my way. Tranny temp settled about 216-218. I thought I would see a drastic improvement over last trip where it was 10 degrees warmer outside and got up to 225-227. I saw Richard’s ran about 214. So if I’m only 2 degrees off the Jedi master I suppose I feel ok about it.
I painted the trans cooler inlet and outlet and hit it with the IR gun and it was 192 top and 193 bottom. Not much “cooler” compared to the inlet and outlet
Check out the pics and lemme know what ya guys think
Well I tell you based on the color of that fluid, I would not be upset about changing it, I think it was due!
Yea that temp is within the margin of error.
So the temp in and out of the cooler depends on the fan running pulling air through it. You could unplug the fan controller so it would go to full speed and see if that changes the temp any through the cooler.

After running for a bit, the coolant in the radiator is going to be around 180 to 195 assuming the engine ECM has not caused the fan to kick on. The trans fluid moving through the trans cooler cannot be cooler than the radiator temp.
One of the curiosities of the Newell hydraulic fan setup is the fan speed varies from coach to coach when the ecm is not switching it to high. It was my understanding that the adjustment screw on the gold box allowed one to control the low setting fan speed. I know folks who reported fan speeds around 50 at idle, while my coach fan barely turned at idle when cold. Have you made any observations on your fan speed when cold? You might confirm with Newell to see if your cold fan speed could be increased.
IIRC, you had commented earlier that the trans ran much cooler with the fan controller unplugged.
Nice work on the fluid changes. I love the pull cart for the fluids. Do you have a link for that?
