I think that would prevent serious damage to the fresh water tank, but no reason to use it routinely as the safety measure. You are totally correct in worrying about the effect of even small amounts of pressure on large surfaces. Lets say the side of the tank is 2 ft by 8 ft equaling 16 square feet equaling 2304 square inches. At 30 psi water pressure that equates to 69000 lbs of force on the side of the tank.
