Hmmm, and you may not have noticed this in the heat of the moment. When you turned the key to activate the slides, did the yellow light on the room control panel come on? There is a 15 to 20 second delay after you turn the key, to allow the slide seal to deflate. The room will not move until the yellow light activates.

And as Tom said you always deploy and retract the slides in the travel mode. There is nothing in the system that prevents you from moving them in the level mode, but you can cause all kinds of twisting and torquing issues if you do.
