Is there a certain type of tape that should be used for this?

I used Scotch 130C Linerless Rubber Splicing Tape but the Glendinning Power Reel CM-7 chewed it up.  I didn't have bare wire exposed, just the insulated wires which had no damage.  I used Southwire 6/4 SOOW to replace it.  I made extension cords from the 38' remaining of the 100' roll and the 40' wire I took off of the reel.
