Can you do your best to answer Richard's questions above? They would be very helpful in continuing diagnosis. Air compressors don't typically fail without warning. They show signs of getting longer to air up as the rings get older. You'll get air in the coolant making it seem like a head gasket went out. The governor should be attached at the air dryer actually. I personally wouldn't jump into replacing a compressor. I'd fathom a gues of some form of massive air leak like a blown air bag. They can be hard to hear but will cause very similar issues.
