Nice work Dennis. Tell us more about the top dash panel you removed? I looked all around mine and did not see a way that the dash would come apart. Maybe they are different but I would love to see more pics of how you accessed it.

Here are some pictures. The top piece snaps in place

Good access to the gauges.  There is a wet spot on the floor right by the fuse panel under the glove box. I’m hoping it’s just residual antifreeze. Nothing under the dash appears to be wet but who knows

Nice, thanks. So you just pry gently up on it and it comes off? Are they using those Christmas tree type fasteners to hold it down?

Yea hopefully, I have a slight leak I believe in my windshield. I can see where they tried to fix it with silicone all along the top of the windshield gasket.

Christmas tree like type things. They are reusable.

Luckily my carpet is burgundy so the red antifreeze isn’t ruining it

Yea they must have been wine drinkers and did not want to have to worry about spills!

After you pulled the dash did you cut out the black plastic material? I see in one of the shots there are some marks that look like yellow grease pencil - did you cut out a section to get to the heater core? I thought about this but did’t do it. At least that way I could determine if the heater core needed to come out or not… great pickup on the this post btw! Now that it is just slightly below melting point in my storage building I will start working on this project again. I posted a new thread but will delete it since it looks like what I need is now here :-) Thanks guys!

The plastic material on the top of the dash was already cut. I would’ve assumed the factory did that but who knows. Keep me posted on the actual heater core removal

I talked to Newell and they said about 20 hours of shop time to R/R the heater core since they have to raise the dash, pull the heater core, test it, reinstall, check for leaks, the road test for leaks and reinstall the dash. Im debating about it. I know I can do it but I just don’t have the time due to work :-(

There is a lot of stuff behind that dash…. Wonder how much the heater core itself costs??

My bypass worked great. If I get that cold I’ll just use the aqua hot heat exchanger for warmth while I’m going down the road

My aqua hot heater system has two ducts that run up to the front for the driver and passenger, if yours is like that then you really would only need the dash heater core for defrosting the windshield.

Let us know if you get a price on the heater core.

Talked to Newell and the price for a new heater core is $1084 with my senior discount and AAA club membership (not really) …

I had the great Aquahot guru,Rudy Legett, and Scott his new helper come by today and they got my AH unit running great. It cost a bunch but got a new brain and pump for one that kept sticking. I did skinny up into the engine compartment to figure out that the AH engine coolant loop is controlled by the farthest back into the engine bay - you can barely see them and you had better not have a barrel chest or you won’t fit to turn the faucets on/off.
