Series 60 oil?
#1

What oil weight are you using in your Series 60?
Any particular brand?
How much is required for an oil and filters change?

Also same questions for the 20KW Kohler generator?

Forest, I use Delo 400 LE 15W40 in both engines. The series 60 is 38 qts according to the Detroit book. I don't know about gen. I feel any good brand is fine. I used Shell in my other MH. The reason I'm using Delo is I understand that is what MHT used when they changed the oil when I bought the coach last year.

Larry you're not using a multi-weight?
Another question are you changing your own oil or using someone like Speedco?
I don't mind changing the oil it's just a pain to deal with the old oil.

Forest there is a metal tag next to the fuel filter that tells you what to use. I have always used 15W40 in every diesel I've ever owned. I used Shell Rotella 15w40 in my Cat and in my Cummins. Cat said install filter dry, Cummins said fill them and Detroit does not say, that I can find.

from talking to different people including someone at newell, i have concluded there is no reason to run synthetic in the series 60 in our coaches. just my opinion.

Forest, I looked up the amount for the Kohler 20kw gen and with filter the amount is 6.1 qts and I use 15w40. The same as I use in the engine. I also looked in my Detroit Engine Operators' Guide and on page 37 they recommend 15W40 and 40 qts with filter. I always put in about 38 qts and crank the engine let run for awhile then wait for an hour or so then check it again and add what whatever it needs to fill it. Just bought 10 gals.of Delo yesterday and within the next week or so change it. It has been a year since it was changed. Just got finished today changing the lube in the rear end. Five gals. it took of 75W90 synthetic. I tell you these MHs are expensive even it you do your own work. I agree with Tom. Cat said you can put synthetic in the crank case, but you still need to change it at the same time you do reg. oil.

Hmmm, so 38 quarts for the engine + 6 quarts for the generator. Let's see, that's 11 gallons. Lot of oil to bring to the recycler after I spill some pouring it back into the gallon jugs....

Don't overfill. Mine only takes 33 qts with both filters changed & prefilled.

Steve, so you do prefill the filters. I feel that is better. No dry run time. They probably hold one and one half gallons of oil. Pretty heavy down there while on your back. Do you fill using the little outside holes where it will be filtered are just pour it in? Out of the can it is probably clean enough to just pour it in. That was the way Cummins said do it.
