When the DDEC (Detroit Diesel Electronic Control) module detects a major issue with the engine it will shut the engine down. However, sometimes this leaves you stranded in the middle of an intersection or in a lane of traffic instead of off the roadway or on the shoulder. The override switch allows the engine to start and run for a couple of minutes so you can get off the road. WARNING: driving with the override switch on longer than necessary to get off the road could potentially result in engine damage.
