Average mileage of different engine setups

Steve we just finished a 2400 mile trip on our series 60 the silver leaf said 7.6. I drive 63 with the cruise on pulling a Chevy HHR about 3300lbs

We have the 6V92 Silver DD engine.....350 horsepower with after cooled turbo. We pull an enclosed car trailer. Coach (36') weighs 29,000 lbs., and trailer with car (2001 VW Beetle) weighs in around 7,000 lbs. Have been traveling full time since 2012 and average around 6.5 to 7 mpg for the last 64,000 miles. Have around 167,000 miles on the odometer. As others have indicated, terrain has an impact. We set cruise control at 60 mph....that is our sweet spot for best mileage.

This is great info! Mike, thanks for getting back to me. Joe and whatsnewell, thanks for sharing your input! 60 or low 60s seems to be the mph range for mileage. I guess torque level must be high enough with these engines at the lower speeds to navigate the hills. Good to know!

Of all our coaches our Cummins got the best mileage at about 9 but not sure that helps since I don’t think Newell used them.  Our 8v92 got about 4 towing a Jeep and running the generator.  Our current coach has an S60 and gets close to 7 according to VMSPc and the DDEC control panel.  I don’t buy coaches for fuel mileage and in the big scheme of things that is the least expensive part of owning one.  It is still cheaper than flying/hotel/rent car for two or more people to travel anywhere.

Steve,
We have an 08 with the C15 600 bhp 1850 lbs torque CAT and Allison transmission. There is approximately 63000 miles on the odometer. The SilverLeaf dash shows over the life of the coach it has averaged 4.6 mpgs.

I took this picture today before I filled up in MT. As you can see it covers 1125 miles from Rapid City, SD (last fill up) to Glacier National Park and area. I am very happy with this fuel mileage considering the hills and mountains in route. I think I posted earlier, but I picked up over 1/2 mpg when I had thenvalves adjusted in Big Cabin, OK.

Series 60, 12.7L. I drive 63 to 65 Mph

This mixed driving from Florida to Maine towing the Subie.

This approximately 1 mpg higher than when I first bought the coach. I think the contributors to the mileage in order of importance are adjusting the overhead, new radiator, and low restriction muffler.

I guess I must be the winner for poor fuel mileage. 5.0 towing a 7000 lb trailer. Not much difference on the prairies of Kansas or over the Rockies. I drive like a grandma.  It is interesting to note that diesel is one of the smallest budget expenses after full timing for two years.

I calculate the old fashion way, Miles divided gallons purchased each refill. Then an average over about period say 30k miles. Over the last 30k I've avgeraged 5.6 MPG at about 63 to 66 mph. I've gotten as high as 7 and as low as 4.9. The 4.9 was a 75+ mph run on a tank of fuel. Ps tires are rated at 75 mph, so not recommended.

I have a C15 625hp with the 12sp ZF transmission. My generator runs about 20% of the time I travel. I travel mostly in the Sierra's, Rocky mountains etc. 25% east of the Rocky's. I pull an "V" nosed enclosed trailer with a car in it at 10K , or Ford Diesel F350 with a motorcycle in the back, at about 7k lbs. I hardly drive without a trailer or truck.  

My fuel prices on the west coast run about $3.95 to $4.25. My point to this is, My cost are higher when I travel, per mile than a midwest, traveler at $2.40 per gallon. So it all depends on where you drive and How you drive

As a side note, my last diesel pusher was 10' shorter, 1/2 the weight and 1/2 the horse power, pulling the same loads. It got about 8.3 mpg average. It was just a bit slower climbing 6% grades, 42mph vs 52 mph in the Newell. That coach wouldn't last for 400K like I hope a Newell will.
