Charging the Toad - Dingy Battery
#1

Coach 1482, a 2020p model was wired to tow a stacker trailer with air brakes, I tow a pickup truck.  On days which required quite a bit of time using the coach service brakes the truck battery would be somewhat depleted.  I recently called Newell to ask where I should get the power from.  It was suggested to get power from the +12VDC bus bar inside the rear Spyder Load Center in the engine compartment.  I think the connectors inside the load center are AMP Universal Mate-N-Lok II, I have some spare parts of those connectors which were also used on my last coach.

Inside the Load Center, connector "B" is the wiring that goes directly to the trailer plug.  I extracted Connector B pin 5 which is a Black wire that goes to the trailer plug +12 VDC pin.  I attached an inline fuse holder to the Bus Bar inside the Load Center, attached it to a red Mate-N-Lok connector.  I plugged the extracted pin 5 into the other side of the Mate-N-Lok red connector (see photo) & voila!, I now have charging power to my toad battery.  I put a diode on the truck battery to prevent back feeding the coach.

Good job, Jim!

You've unlocked yet another great mystery of why Newell some things during production. This has caught MANY by surprise...actually SHOCK...when they find out that the 12v constant power to the 7-pin is NOT wired and never was. INSTEAD, Newell cut and coiled that lead behind the Load Center panel, to be "Landed" if needed. Wild.

Last year, not only did I spend a TON of time tracking down the CORRECT path, and pin layout, but I also helped several others who needed to get that pin powered. Come to find out, there existed a couple DIFFERENT pin formats which may have been the reason Newell elected to keep those pins dead for fear that they may be incorrectly wired for stackers, trailers, TOADS, etc.

Since others may be questioning the same problem, I'm going to show the two version of the pin layout; using OUR era 2015 as well as a new layout that Adam created at my request to show not only the front pinout, but the rear as well since it's SO EASY to get all messed up when testing.

Really, besides a slight labeling difference, the only changes are for a couple of the wire colors. So, Newell states the new version is for coaches #1810 and newer.

ALSO IMPORTANT: SOME COACHES, LIKE OUR'S WILL ONLY ENABLE THE BRAKE LIGHTS/TURN SIGNALS WHEN THE EMERGENCY BRAKE IS OFF AND THE TRAILER AIR CHARGE BUTTON IS DEPRESSED!
