HELP: Need VIN and Coach Number Info on pre-1990 Newells
#1

I have asked before but wanted a separate thread just for information regarding VIN and/or coach # information for pre-1990 Newells. I have some VIN information but I am missing a lot of it. I am also missing coach number information (the coach number was not part of the VIN until 1990) for most of these pre-1990 Newells.

The information I have is somewhat limited and in some cases conflicting for coach # vs VIN. The earliest confirmed match I have is 1986 VIN ending in 004 (4th coach built in 1986) is #86 based on the Newell numbering system implemented in 1983.

If you have a pre-1990 Newell, PLEASE post here or PM me the VIN.

If you have a 1983-1989 Newell and have a document or numbers you have located on the inside of your coach that confirms a coach number (hint it must be 1 - 212 inclusive) such as markings on the inside of the engine compartment doors, markings on the inside of cabinet panels, or a floorplan that provides a coach number, PLEASE post here or PM me.

I greatly appreciate the assistance.

Michael,

Here is some info on our recently acquired 1984 Newell. I bought it in April 2019 from Ernestine Chambers in Gridley, CA. Ms. Chambers and her late husband (Morgan) owned it for most of its existence, but there have been 4 other owners over the years as well. The blueprint carries the date of Aug 29, 1983 and says it was designed for Kenneth R. (F?) Thomas and last revised on Nov 1, 1983. It is listed as 35' 2" in overall length, has a 6v92 DD engine and an Allison trans with 5 forward gears. The VIN is 1N9502176E1011017. The sticker on the wall near the door says the date of MFR was Jan 1984. GVWR is listed as 34,000 pounds. I recently weighed it at 27,680. A page listing the circuit breakers in a 3 ring binder that is the unofficial owners manual says this is coach #179 but I have seen nothing anywhere else to confirm or contradict that. Several photos of this coach were posted on this site back in March or April of this year.

On a personal note, do you live on Lake Travis near Austin? If so, my wife (Laureen) and I came out to your house and also had BBQ at the Salt Lick with you, your wife and Clarke and Elaine Hockwald several years ago when they were first getting on the road. Laureen and Elaine are sisters. If you would like any more info about this coach just let me know. Best wishes.

Great to hear from you Glenn. I appreciate the information. Yes, I remember that dinner with the two of you and Clarke and Elaine well. Good food and good company. We need to get together!

The #179 would be a 1988. If you ever have to take any interior panels off or replace the refrigerator, the number should be written on the wood hidden from normal sight. Your coach would likely have a number less than 60.

The VIN for my 1983 is 1N9805175D1011006
Date of MF October 1982,

This is right about the time Newell switched to the new numbering system and does not seem to have coach number. It was originally commissioned by a Dr Dubois of Marietta, GA.

Thanks for the VIN and original owner Marcus. You are correct. You would be within a couple of coaches one way or the other to the beginning of the current numbering system. I can't tell since I don't have any confirmed VIN/coach numbers for 1983 at all.

Our '86 VIN:
1N9912X81G1011007
Coach #89 .
I think you already have this information as you first told me it is #89 . It is shown as 89 in Newell paperwork I have found as well . It's odd that it's shown everywhere as a 1986 model and is 102 wide , yet the "G" is indicative of a 1985 and the MFG date on the placard at driver's left is April 85 .I guess Newell has their own system .
Thanks ,
Chris

Based on conversations with another Newell owner and the paperwork from Newell, I think it is safe to say that in fact you do have coach #89. The G in the 10 digit confirms that yours is by law considered a 1986 model.

Newell, like the auto manufacturing industry, builds vehicles well in advance of the model year. It is not unusual to find cars that are designated as a model year that is 6 months later than the build date. Newell has been manufacturing 2020 models for well over a year now.
