Engine 'blowout'

Sudden loss of power on Highway 101, north of Santa Barbara. Able to make it off the HW. Found this when looking at the engine. Sheesh! Waited 9 hours for a tow, but fortunately had Coach-net coverage, they were great at finding someone to tow it to Central Truth Center in San Luis Obispo. Now the wait till Monday for options. 

What is this part that blew a hole? Is it replaceable without a new engine (my wife's fear).

It's your air compressor that failed. Your engine should be fine but they will need to check the oil and possibly drop the engine oil pan to make sure there's no metal scraps from that compressor

To help understand what is going on.

The intake for the air compressor comes from the intake manifold. With a hole in the compressor, all the air from the turbo is escaping though the hole and not going into the engine. So the engine would be way down on power, but probably not throw any error codes.

And I could be terribly wrong……..

Interesting.  In the second picture,  looking through the hole in the compressor crankcase it looks like the connecting rod and cap are intact . Possibly a rod bolt came out and was pushed through the case by the crank or the rod . Hopefully everything went out , but shrapnel could have found it's way into your engine . 
I would be curious to know what the shop finds . Did your dash gauge indicate a drop in air pressure ?

The ID sticker : 107623X indicates the compressor is a reman Bendix TF-750 .
