DD60 starting problem
#1

I fired up the rig to bring in the slides and it started instantly as usual but after running for 10 seconds or so it sounded odd began to run rough and died.  Feul starvation was my first thought, so I checked the filter. Sure enough it had no feul in it.  I added feul to bring it up to about the halfway point on the filter and tried again, no luck. Dianna was watching the feul level in the filter while I cranked the engine and saw that it was leaking at the base of the globe. I removed the globe reseated the o-ring and put it back together.  After filling it back up with feul no more leak, but I can't get it to fire at all. Any suggestions?

It takes quite a lot of cranking to clear the air from the injector lines once they’ve got air in them.

Also, change your fuel filter while you’re there.

As a total aside, remove the fuel tank cap. The symptoms sound like the other owner’s issue where the cap stopped venting, causing the engine to die after a short period of running. His issue did have longer running than you’re experiencing, but it’s easy to test while cranking to clear the air.

If you’re comfortable doing so, cracking open the injector lines at the injectors will help expunge the air faster.

You need to try to get fuel back into the engine. Need to look in the fuel bay and see if you have a priming pump there, it will be a black knob. Not sure if that was fitted on your year coach.

If not, I have used a vacuum cleaner with the hose output to blow air into the fuel tank to force fuel back into the filter and the engine. I loosen the fuel fitting on the fuel pump on the engine and put a pan under it to catch the fuel. Blow air until you get a good stream of fuel coming out at the fuel pump and then tighten up the fitting. Keep the vacuum going and try to crank the engine. Be careful when you remove the hose from the fuel filler, it can splash fuel back on you if you remove it quickly. I wrap a rag around the vacuum hose so that I get a good tight fit. Don't worry the tank should have a vent to allow some air out of it and the tank may make some noise as it expands a bit but your not going to hurt it as long as the tank is in good shape.
Not that long back I had another Newell member I helped, and his coach would not prime. Turned out it was the check valve was stuck, even after I blew compressed air through it, could not get fuel to go through it. We had to replace it with a new check valve and while we were at it we replaced the fuel line from the tank to the fuel filter (was not an easy job!). Once you have fuel going to the engine it should fire, as long as there is not another issue.

On mine the primer pump is right in the engine bay. You'll have to push on it for about an hour before even trying to fire it though.

It takes a lot longer to reestablish prime than you would think.

If you have the pump on top of the fuel tank, that is the BEST way to get fuel into the filter. It takes a LOT of pumping. Pump the filter full if you can.

If you can’t utilize the pump, then fill the filter completely full of fresh fuel, or clean ATF. I like new ATF because I know it’s not contaminated.

Turn the key on, and use the remote start at the rear. Crank for 15 seconds. Yeah I know, it will seem like an eternity. Wait a couple of minutes before each 15 second effort. You are looking for bubbles around the filter collar. If you have bubbles, reseal until you don’t. If you have big bubbles directly above the fuel inlet on the filter, you may have a leak in the fuel line or worse a broken fuel pickup tube. If you see bubbles STOP immediately. If you continue to run you only empty the lines again.

If it doesn’t try to start after 5 tries, then go to the measures that Jeff and Mark outlined above.

I completely forgot about that pump. I did get it to start eventually, just had to keep trying it every couple minutes. After 10 or so attempts if started.  Thanks for the responses.
