Hi all, my name is David and I am new to the technical aspects of luxury coaches. I have a 1990 Newell Coach, with 57000 miles, which has long since been "forgotten", a term that is thrown around loosely as the coach is sort of defunct, the diesel generator up front has stopped producing electricity but it does run the same as when it was bought. The rear camera has also failed, playing noise but only showing a fuzzy screen. The plumbing, heating and air are fine as well as electrical. I am trying my hardest to revive this coach, as my family allowed it to sit so long without the proper maintenance. Tomorrow I will be taking better photos of the engine, generator, interior and exterior to follow up with this post. I am also an active member on the Ford Raptor forum in the case that any coach owners here also have one, I go by PermianRaptor on there as well. My prior experience with forums has lead me to seek one like this as the local shops are not a help at all. Many thanks in advance, photos of the coach are attached.

hi all,

now that i have my newell home again, it is time to fix a few things.

i have a coolant leak under the dash and it is not the aquahot.

it is not obvious to see but i know it is there for several reasons....i have seen it drip under the front cap, i can smell it in the drivers seat and there is spotting on the carpet right at the center of the dash console that juts out.

in the past i have tightened the coolant line clamps that i can reach under the dash to no avail.

it is leaking enough now to cause have the coolant level drop in the plastic tank in the back.

this all started on our trip home from canada the last time we used it.  (yea, too long ago i know )

i thought i would be smart and turn off the valves at the engine in the valve block that goes to the heater core up front....but the valve packing was old and leaked terribly when the valve was shut.  and the valve is in the center of the block so not easy to change.

i really dont care about a dash heater as we dont really go where it is cold and the aquahot has heaters right at the feet of the driver and passenger and has 2 lines that run to the dash defroster.

so i think i will just cap them off and see what happens.

do any of you know if the 2 hoses that go to and from the heater core at the back of the coach go anywhere else?

there are 2 more for the aquahot.

NOT! had a major thunderstorm pass through today which knocked out power all day for most of south Louisiana.  We did fine, wished I still had the Newell, the generator would have been nice.

I am another new guy from FLA.

Just wanted to let u all know what i found out about my 1999 Newell Coach this past weekend.

I have been motorhoming sense 1978. My first MH was a 1977 GMC 26ft. Did a lot of updating including adding 24" to the rear of this coach. We kept the GMC for 27 years.

Purchased the Newell in April 2006. Have done a lot of updates & play with it a few times a week.

Now what i found out. Three years ago while on the Oregon coast had to drop the front end down all the way to level the coach. When i went to lift the front up after our stay it would not move. Had to drive inland to get it repaired.
They found that the coach had a hole in the right front air bag. Had both front air bags replaced.

Now about last weekend. I keep the coach in a Airplane hanger & went to check on it. Found that i forget to leave the 110v ac compressor on. Had lost all the air in the front air bags. Started the coach & turned the air compressor on.....
still the front end would not come up. Called Doug at Excalibur Coach & he said he had the same problem with a 2005 Newell he was working on. The problem is the air bags have a rubber hump on the inside & when the bag goes all the down, this rubber hump seals the air inlet on the top of the bag preventing air from coming in.

Jacked the coach up 2" or so & the air started to come in the left bag. (right side still down) Put my hand on the right bag & it was soft plus i could feel air coming out of it. Was hard to believe that this almost new air bag was leaking.
Ordered new one from Newell & called a truck repair shop.
When we got the coach jacked up & the wheel off we could see the air bag hole & what caused it. When the bag is all the way in the down position one of the steel gussets that supports the air bags upper plate sticks out far enough to
squeeze & cut open the bag.  Checked the other gussets & could see where they touched the bag... but not far enough to make a hole. Cut an inch off the one that caused the leak (for the second time) & ground down the other three.
Lesson learned....always find out what caused the hole in any air bag.

hi,  a dumb question because i have never used it or thought of it....

how does it work?

is it live all the time?

so if i was out drycamping with someone who had a trailer, could they plug in and share my power without doing anything?

does it share the inverter power?

or just whatever power is on the panel. (genny or shore?)

thanks

tom

Hi. I am new the forum and I am looking to buy a Newell in a about year so I am trying to do my research well ahead of time. While I love every Newell I have seen, the island bed layout really grabs me more than the other floorplans. I plan on buying a 2004-2005 model and was wondering if anyone knows when they started building this floorplan, and maybe how many of this floorplan were made, as it seems very hard to find VS the traditional bed on one side or other

i bought a 1" impact gun and sockets so i can take the wheels off of the newell if i need to.  so i wanted a torque wrench that would do the 450-475 foot pounds for the lug nuts.

those babies are expensive!

i kept looking on craigslist and ran across an old ad for a TCI 600 FRN that goes to 600 ft pound.  and it was only 20 minutes away which is very unusual considering where i live.

so i went and bought it and got it AND a 1" male to 3/4" female impact adapter for $50 bucks....quite a score.  he said he only used it a handful of times in the 8 years he had it and when he did it was on heads of kenworths.  so i am assumming it is close to being calibrated.

given i would have had to buy the adapter anyway, and they are 20-25 bucks, i effectively got the torque wrench for 30 bucks.  it is BIG and heavy.

yesterday i moved the newell to our home in wittmann.

it was an eventful drive....ha

first i had to have a blown out tire replaced.  coachnet was great and they let me use my truck tire guy.  took about 3 hours and 650 bucks for the new tire (inside drivers rear).

then i drove through phoenix rush hour traffic for an hour and a half.  even that couldnt let the smile leave my face.

i then took it to have an emissions test done.  i had scoped out the place to make sure i could get in and out.  it was close to closing time when i got there....about 630pm.  got it checked and then as i went to leave the steps wouldnt go in.  after about 15 minutes i had them guide me out with the steps out into the small parking lot with no exit....

i lubed it up and it broke loose.  then drove home to the country.

clarke and elaine were standing at the front of my house as i drove up.  darlene hadnt gotten home yet.

clarke and elaines coach is in the background next to the shop

life is good
