         I have a 17.5 powertech generator in my 1994 newell . one of the fuel filters is a spin on and one is a cartridge with a glass bowl. I am not able to locate a part # for the filter with the glass bowl. Thanks, Paul

   

It is a microswitch associated with the HWH slide mechanism. There are two mounted under the bed that tell the HWH brain when the slide is fully in or out. 

What does it do? Well, if it becomes jammed, and continues to make the circuit while moving the slide, it will cause the HWH to try it’s hardest to ventilate the roof of the slide with the slide lock pins. Trust me, I know these things.

The reason it does that, is that the slide locks do not come down until the switch “makes” indicating the room is in. When the switch jammed in the closed position, the slide locks deployed while the room was moving. Arrrrrrgghhhhhh.

I have an 86 Perkins powering my generator and have a couple of questions. 

Does anyone have a Perkins connection for parts. I am needing a water cooled exhaust manifold. I have found a couple used ones on E-Bay and one on a Shipwreck Salvage website. There is also a Bowman heat exchanger out there they say is an upgrade. 

Also I am pondering the usefulness of the water cool exhaust manifold. Wouldn't the purpose of the exhaust heating the coolant be the same principal as a block heater? I get the water cooled exhaust manifold in a marine application where you are heating the cooler/cold fresh or salt water to keep the engine coolant temp at an efficient operating temperature, but I would think under normal operating conditions from April thru October keeping the temp between 150 and 190 wouldn't be a problem.  
I haven't had the coach out during the winter months nor do I plan on doing so. So couldn't I eliminate the water cooled exhaust manifold and use a regular exhaust manifold and wrap it, which would help cut down on extra heat in the generator compartment. Am I missing something........

I have been going to dog shows and running generator hard.  Like running for days on end hard.  When I got home to Auburn, I noticed a little oil on ground under my front mounted genny.  Investigating, I found that the oil was from a little puddle in the genny compartment right under the “slobber tube”.

A call to a more experienced guru confirmed that this was not something to worry about and that I could catch the output in a can.  During that conversation the master guru reminded me that I should change oil every 100 hours of generator use.

Confession:  I have never kept up with generator use.  Newell has performed “annuals” on the genny every year...but honestly I have never thought about the genny.  I went ahead and changed the oil and filter.   

This leaves me with a few questions....

1) How do you keep up with how many hours you have run the genny?  My solution was to write the number of hours on the filter.  Do you guys keep logs?  Do you just wing it?  Or do you only do an annual service?
2) Is it worth it to run synthetic oil in the genny?  It seems that if you are changing oil at 100 hours, it is not really a good investment.
3) What is the realistic life on a generator?  I have over 8000 hours on mine and it is going strong.  It starts easy, does not produce smoke, produces a steady voltage and is generally a happy camper.  (I do baby it by always having ACs and high current devices turned off when starting / stopping generator).  

Since I have all the paperwork from Newell, and they record generator hours when you do an an annual, I can figure out if I have been going over the limit.

Hello all, I am new to this forum! I will be going to buy my first coach and first Newell this coming week! I am flying down to look everything over and hopefully if everything checks out I will be driving it home. I was wondering if any of you had any tips that I should keep in mind when looking this coach over and driving it?? Everything looks like it is in good shape from the pictures and videos and talking to the previous owner. It has the Detroit 8V92, with I believe is the 5 speed, Allison. It is 40 foot with a tag axel. Anyway, anything I should look at or should change out if it hasn't been that any of you will know of would be greatly appreciated!

I don't know that I've seen autotransfomers discussed, here, but this issue just came up on a Prevost thread. I know y'all have discussed power grids at campgrounds and your surge protectors, so wanted to share that it appears that the NFPA guidelines are being modified to restrict the use of autotransformers. But more than that, Jerry was a loyal and true friend to many of us here at Newell Coach. His smile and laugh were contagious. He will be dearly missed.
