Electric engine fans?
#1

The new place i work has a bunch of trucks. They all have detroit 60s in them. The real key here that got me thinking is. The electric engine fan conversions they have done.  No engine horsepower being robbed by the engine fan anymore. That would open up a lot of extra room in the engine bay as well. Anyone else do it yet? Or will I have to eventually be the first one to work it out.

Prevost is using electric fans. They claim a 1-4% fuel economy improvement. My 8V-92 has rear radiator using engine driven fan. I have considered adding an electric puller fan to the side of the engine bay as a helper .

Good to hear from you Carl, hope all is well. I know on our prevost when your standing in the back and the fan kicks on its violent on the the belts and airbags that support the drive.

The place i work now in Maine is a tiny trucking outfit. They have 6 trucks. And one of the owners kids just bought a 95 prevost. Hes done all kinds of work to it. Looks nice though. Got a good deal on it last fall and worked on it through the winter. Ive been trying to save up some money so I can put some new floors in mine. Looks like a salon window had a week at one point and took out some flooring. Not a huge issue but needs to be done. Floors. Drivers window needs resealed. And then on to the pretty things. Like new upholstery and curtains. New wallpaper. Should be amazing in the next 5-10 years.

Hi Carl,

It’s great to hear from you. We are touring NE and the Maritimes next year. Hopefully we can meet in person.

There are a couple of threads in the Prevost community about DIY conversion to electric fans, but honestly little technical data other than it works. One guy did a custom shroud with SPAL fans. One guy used 2 2 fan setups from a Chevy Tahoe or something like that. In both cases I think they simply mounted on/off tstats to the water pump to control the power.

What I can’t get from those posts/youtube vids is power consumption, any change in fuel mileage, and performance in challenging conditions. For example, last week I climbed Snoqualmie pass in 95 degree temps with no issues with the mechanical setup. The electric setup that Prevost/Volvo is using is a bit more sophisticated, with the control system controlling the number of fans running.

One more odd tidbit. The guy who did the SPAL fans swears he tried mounting them inside like the orig and that did not work. He attests that they have to be mounted outside. The guy that used the Chevy setup simply mounted them inside and fabbed a primitive shroud.

I am leaving the coach for a few days and will try to find links when I get back.
