Trying to find the air dryer on a 1994 Newell Motor Coach??

When we first bought our Newell we had many air leaks the compressor cycled every 15 minutes so I started to looking for air leaks and one of the biggest leak came from the air dryer so I looked for a rebuild kit and new canister and found you could buy a brand new air dryer with canister for just a few bucks more if I remember it was right around $140. Now doing the job by yourself is almost impossible unless you have a arm extension so I cut a piece of althread and put it on the air dryer housing then slipped it thought the firewall and it held there till I could start the other two bolts from the inside of the electrical cord bay. After all three bolts inserted and tightened I then connected the air lines last.

This is a direct response to the original poster, Anytime RV Life.

I am not known for tact. I am known for diagnostic ability. The time spent diagnosing a problem is WAY cheaper than the parts cannon.

This is your first post on this forum, we do not know you or any of the circumstances behind this situation. You have posted in the Emergency Help section. The forum members take those posts very seriously and respond quickly, because we think you need emergency help.

Your responses and terminology would lead one to believe that you are very new to the coach, very new to diesel pushers, and/or new to hands on mechanical work.

We can help you best IF you will take the time to carefully answer the following questions. The help you get will depend upon the detail of the answers you provide, so find a keyboard and don't do this on the phone.

What is the number of the coach, look at the last four digits of the VIN. 1994 happens to be the year that Newell switched from 8V92 engines to Series 60, the answers to your questions are HIGHLY dependent on which engine you have.

How long have you have the coach?
Where are you physically located?
What is your background with regard to RVing? with regard to mechanical skills? with regard to electrical skills?

Who diagnosed that you need a new compressor and dryer? Please provide as much info as possible. This is going to get expensive fast, and you may be spending time and money that doesn't fix the problem.

Post a picture of the coach. We don't care really about the picture, but to use this forum successfully, you need to know how to post pictures of what you are talking about.

Thank you so much and Yes it's the 8v92 and yes the part number you gave sounds correct, there was rust at end is why I could not see last number. It doesn't build pressure unless on a high RPM it builds very slowly 20-25 minutes, however suspension is not airing up and yesterday it aired up but supply guage said 0.. and then it built up and one side dropped. No leaks unless internally. At first it wouldn't build at all then high RPM it takes 25 minutes for the brakes to build up and then half side dropped now it won't build at all. The air dryer is built into the brake master 68 old style series. Inside compressor is the governor.. correct? Because i do not see on outside of compressor .. it must be built inside?.I have been on phone with lead tech at Newell yesterday from Oklahoma and he's leading toward compressor he was stumped.. .. is there any way you can give me a call? 205-720-424five

Can you do your best to answer Richard's questions above? They would be very helpful in continuing diagnosis. Air compressors don't typically fail without warning. They show signs of getting longer to air up as the rings get older. You'll get air in the coolant making it seem like a head gasket went out. The governor should be attached at the air dryer actually. I personally wouldn't jump into replacing a compressor. I'd fathom a gues of some form of massive air leak like a blown air bag. They can be hard to hear but will cause very similar issues.

Do you have, or have access to an air compressor? If you can hook an external air compressor into the quick disconnect port in the rear, we can tell a lot by what happens then.

Also I noticed someone who was working on this before put Teflon tape around air hoses I have a picture on last post pointing to the white Teflon coming out. I did not think you used Teflon on air hoses like that just water pipe, plumbing, etc.? It might not matter but I thought it would get debris in it that's not needed... just wanted to ask about that.

Yes I have an air compressor and I can try it when I go back out. I am not by the coach at the moment.

The first picture that shows Teflon tap is the air govorner. I've used tape before. As long as your carful not to get it under the threads and into the inside of the fitting it works. If you have access to a pressure guage you can hook up off the back of the compressor you could eliminate that as a source of problem.

Thank you for all the details. Given the recent work by at least two different parties, who knows what we have. So we are going to go through the basics. It will help if you look up Newell Air System Fundamentals on YouTube.

Let’s do two things as a top level diagnostic. We are trying to determine if you have a massive leak OR the engine compressor system will not provide it.

Plug in the external compressor and set it to 100 psi. What happens? If the coach builds pressure eventually, then the diagnosis of the engine compressor/governor/air dryer may be accurate. If it doesn’t build pressure, you may have an air leak that the engine compressor cannot overcome.

Second, with the key on, and the coach in the travel mode. Check all three six packs and draw a picture of which solenoids are magnetized. With the total replacement, we have to ensure the solenoids are wired correctly or no progress is possible.

I can certainly appreciate your willingness to help get someone on the road.

Personally, I prefer using the forum to solve issues for two reasons. One, it forces the poster to take the time to organize their thoughts and present them in an orderly fashion. Second, it provides a record of what is happening and you get the benefit of the tribal knowledge.

How many of the 6 pack solenoids need to be magnetized? The first 4 in a row, straight down? I am not with the coach at moment will be shortly and will add more details when I can test it.
