I am having problems with a 1981 Newell 12.5 kw Kohler/Perkins gen set.

It will start & run cold, maintaining normal water temp and oil pressure. When I shut it off, it will not restart...dash mounted start/stop switch becomes inactive. The next day it will start...no problem. I have grounded out low oil pressure switch and high temp switch to check safety shutdown...but no change while running.

The shut down system appears to be faulty. It is equipped with an unusual reset switch located near the passenger side main fuse panel.

Does anyone know how this works??

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Mike

Had a chance to hire newells delivery service.. had a hydraulic leak in a hose camping world replaced earlier this spring.. Newell fixed it called me today and said it was ready. Asked if they deliver and how much?

.29 cents a mile both ways for a total of 320 miles for driver
.20 cents per mile for car for return trip of 160 miles.
Plus 9 gallons of gas  at 2.50 for car
Plus 15$ for drivers meals..

Total cost was like a165$ and saves me a whole day of driving ..I would have spent 40$ myself easy just in gas and meals.

Pretty neat serviceSmile

Going to start shopping for a trailer to pull behind the coach. It will be hauling the Jetta and other paraphernalia (bicycles, tools, etc ). When not in 'use' it will be storage as we currently live in the coach.

Curious what features should I look for in a trailer? Will probably go extra height and @ least 5200 lb axles. Will install a few cabinets and storage. On down the road we'll wire for electric and install A/C.

Just wondering those who do, or have pulled trailers what do you wish it would have, or did have?

Marc

I posted previously that I replaced by six house 8D (starter) batteries with twelve 6 volt deep cycle golf cart batteries. (model GC2).  My ProSine inverter is set to stop inverting at 10 volts, and provides power for 8 to 10 hours for essential equipment.  However, at 10 volts cutoff, the deep cycle batteries are still at about 80% charge.  It seems to me that deep cycle batteries should withstand more discharge than that.  I am a novice at this, but would appreciate any advise as to resetting my inverter to better utilize the deep cycle feature of these batteries.

ALOHA!

IF anyone has an idea of barging their MH to Hawaii, forget it. There are no places where you have the luxuries of even the poorest RV park on the mainland. There are no 50 amps.......in fact there are NO amp services, no bath houses, no concrete parking, no water.......and I could go on, but you get the idea by now.

My domicile is here....lucky me......but I always have to put my coach in storage when I travel back here. I ship my car (toad) if I'm going to be a while, but I am anxious to always get back to my MH. After retiring, I decided to go on the road, and having driven for approximately 20 years, off and on with my brother and his family, it was time for me to get my own MH. If I was only smart enough to buy a newell in the beginning, I would not feel so burnt out trying to fix everything that could....and did.....go wrong with the 7 coaches prior to my wish to buy a Newell.

Turning my retirement to Travel Writing and Photography, and a lone female with my co-pilot dog, Thad, I went from one end of the country to the other, several times. Even went from Victoria, Canada to Montreal one time, and noticed the cleanliness and friendship found on that trip.

Now, for all the folks who are thinking of selling their beloved Newell, I am looking for an older model in the mid to high ninties, has been well taken care of, and not exhorbintly expensive. Additionally, if my luck would hold out, I need a real co-pilot who has a voice rather than a snore, and is familiar with the Newell personality. If you are available, I would like to speak with you. Fortunately, I have never had an accident, just been accosted with these niddly mechanical problems!
For any communication with me, please email me at: [email protected]. I will anxiously look forward to hearing from you. Thank you.

A hui hou,
Patricia Arthur

Windows 10 is available now, if you have a machine running Windows 7 or 8 it's a free upgrade. My wife's laptop was running Windows 8.1 which I never liked, updated it to Windows 10 yesterday and like it a lot better.

Gang,

This is only a drill.  If it had been an actual emergency, I would have called Tom, Steve, Forest, etc.  I am posting this under the category: Well, thats a new one (at least to me).

I left Auburn this morning on the way to Newell to get my toasted AC fixed.  When I was pulling onto interstate, I hit a bump and my generator just quit.  Hmmm. I thought.

Hit the switch to turn the generator back on.  It started and I got the Generator light and a couple of minutes later the 120 and 240 lights came on and my house ACs came on.  Its HOT in Alabama right now.

A few minutes down the road, the ACs quit again.  I looked at lights and all were dark.  Except the generator gauges.  They were lit up.

Did another restart and again it ran for a minute and quit.

At this point, I had a lot of different indications.  The generator light would come one, but the transfer switch would not kick on.  Sometimes the generator switch would not light up on start.  (Its hard to tell if the generator is running while going down the interstate).  So I cannot tell you if it was running or not.

I was debating the actions I should take.  1)  I could stop and jam the transfer switch in case it is failing.  2)  I could call Newell support  3)  I could pull into rest stop and wait till night to continue the trip.  4) I could call Tom since he had a generator problem where it would quit while driving.  (If I remember correctly).

As I pulled into the truck stop to get fuel with sweat running down my face, it suddenly dawned on me what the problem was.

Any guesses?

Cheers,
bill
