Hello from wonderful Gila Bend.  I think people here would gladly vacation in Hades to get some relief from the heat. Temps here have been 115-117 the last 3 days.  Since we have had the coach, +/- 5 years, the rear AC has always on occasion tripped the breaker.  Newell checked &serviced all AC's right after we got the coach.  I had assumed that it was possibly a weak breaker as it only happens when it is very hot. I would keep the breaker box door open to help keep breaker cool. What I have observed here is that it seems to be more dependent on outside temp than anything else.  Over 107-108 degrees it will trip in around 5-10 minutes.  Below 107 it runs continuously with no issues.  All night and throughout the morning until temps start to get over 107.   Both front and mid AC's work flawlessly all the time.  The breaker issue is only occurring with the rear AC and only when outside temps are over 107. Any guru ideas on the cause of this phenomenon?

Why is there not a product that you could plug an air line too and have an airline out of that we could then attach to the air chuck in the back of the coach that would send "smoke" into the airlines..wouldn't that make tracking air leaks easier.. Is there a product as such?

 The Becker's Summer Run 2015

Well, we decided on a whim to hit the road one last time before the end of the 2015 summer vacation.  The girls will be going back to school in a week so it's now or never.  Next week I'm starting the build for our Newell Shop and a production greenhouse for the girls.  We took of with no real game plan or set route.  We figured it was best that way.

08-12; pack clothes for the girls and us, get the food ready. Final walk around  for me, rechecking fluids and pressures on the 74.  Do people name their Newell? Jimmy did you have a name for this girl?

08-13; throw in the food in the fridge.  There's still room in the fridge and a couple empty pantry shelves.  Add more food just in case!  Mostly cookies, brownies, ice cream and candy.  For the girls of course, we have 6 but only four are going to make the trip.
We take off around 11:00.  Heading north to a county park my buddy told me about.  Stopped to fuel up and gave a quick tour to a nice couple who wanted to see the Newell.  The classics are a head turner!  I'm a car buff and love this thing.
Arrived at our destination.
Fossil & Prairie Center, Floyd County Conservation, 1227 215th Street
Rockford, Iowa 50468, Phone 641-756-3490
We arrive around 14:00, the girls are ready.  We go through the interpretive center and it is cool.  Used to be the old Rockford Brick and Tile Company.  The clay pit is a Paleozoic fossil bed.  You get to keep any fossils you find.  We took a paint brush, three tine hand rake, hand shovel  and a bucket and we were off.  We found gallon pails full of fossils.  Our six and seven year old could name them all for you.  I'm not going to try.  I let them keep 10 each, plenty to add to our collection at home.
Called it a day around 19:00, found a city campground in Rockford, Iowa.  We were the only ones there and camped right next to the playground.  Girls loved it!

08-14;  started out towards Wisconsin.  Got detoured to Spook Cave in NE Iowa, my wife's suggestion.  She went through it when she was in high school and thought the girls would love it.  Pulled into an awesome, small campground owned by the private cave.  Booked a year out!  We got tickets for the cave, and went for a walk around the campground.  Got back to the camper about 20 minutes later to find a group of ten or so looking over the camper.  Had a guy from Texas asking a hundred questions, super nice guy who was amazed by the condition.  His son was a producer from Disney, they rode motorcycles up together from Texas.  Long story short, we exchanged information and his son may be renting our Newell if a movie calls for a cool 74 motor home.  We would be going along to care for the Newell of course.  We went on the Spook Cave tour and spent the next hour giving tours of our motor home.  It was a blast.  Everyone was great.
Headed out and found a campsite in Wisconsin.  Sports Unlimited, over 375 hook ups. Huge place with a pool, golf course, several bars, restaurant, etc...  We pulled in and Kayla, our daughter said " Dad, there's some drunk guy coming over here, he looks like he wants to talk to you". It was a fire fighter buddy of mine who recognized the Newell from half a mile away.  He brought all his buddies over to see it.  We parked for he night and socialized with new and old friends.

08-15;  got up this morning and it was warm out with high humidity.  We left the camp ground and stopped at the Prairie DuChien Cabela's, nice and cool inside with lots to look at.  Spent a couple hours looking and some buying.  Got a deal on shotgun shells.  Stopped for fuel, did the math and we averaged just under 11 mpg, 10.68.  the generator had ten hours of run time and took just over five gallons of gas.  Then we headed to the Mississippi River Museum in Dubuque.  Spent the rest of the day exploring there, too much to see in one day.    We went down river to Bellevue, a small beautiful river town.  Staying at the Bellevue State Park tonight, we pulled through and you could see heads turning.  One old boy followed us in his truck till we parked and requested to see our rig.  I think I could have sold it to him for $50,000 right there.
I got lazy tonight and we made s'mores over the gas grill.  Too tired to walk up and buy firewood.

08-16; Tomorrow were heading south along the river  to Highway 30 and home.  Been a great trip so far.  Stay safe in your travels, from the Becker Family......

Roy, Cari, Chrystal, Courtney, Kayla, Claire, Chloe and Kinley...

I propose a gathering at the 2016 Dream Cruise which is scheduled for August 20th. I would be looking to arrange parking for the evening of the 17th through noon on the 21st. For those of you that want to attend please just post your positive response. I will then locate an appropriate dry camping spot as close as possible to the Cruise.
I will then post the location and the cost (total and per attendee based upon the number expressing interest). At the moment I have absolutely no idea what this might cost, but I will do my best to be appropriately frugal.

Now we arrive at one of those chicken and egg situations; it's hard for you-all to completely commit until we are sure of the cost per participant, but until I have firm commitments I cannot finalize the cost. I'm confident that someone has done this sort of thing before and can tell us how to work this out.

I have absolutely no interest in competing with the gathering that Tom is working to organize and if a conflict arises Tom's gathering takes precedent. My interest is solely to facilitate a fun experience for my fellow gurus if possible.

Thoughts, comments and snide remarks welcomed from all since I've never done anything remotely like this in my entire life.

rebuild kit for HWH 6pack air leveling valves for newells

after a ton of research, i have put together the parts to rebuild the leveling air solenoid valves on the 6 packs of our newells.  (the ones that have HWH systems)

these are specific to the valve pictured in the pictures and is the HWH RAP 1940

it does appear to work also for the older KIP valves that have a larger orfice that are on the early 90's to late 80's newells.  I do not guarantee that they will work with the KIP valves, but the bodies do seem to be identical from comparing them.

i have worked with the manufacturer of the plunger that has the seat on it to get EXACTLY the right one and accompaning spring.

I will do a large group order and put together a kit that allows you to rebuild 6 valves.  i will be fronting alot of money so i am hoping to get an indication of how many kits you would want.

the kit will contain.   (the picture shows only 1 set for a single valve.  there will be enough for 6 valves)

a solenoid wrench made for these valves.  it takes the nut off of the coil, and then the other side has the nubs to remove the stem from the brass body so you can replace the plunger and spring and o ring.

6 plungers (the cylinder that has the blue seat on the end that seals the valve shut)

6 new springs for the plunger

6 sets of O rings  (the two for the outside of the brass body on the bottom and the one on the inside).   the inner ring is a square ring when i took them apart, but the manufacturer has replaced them with round o rings, so that is what will be included.

it will cost $75 shipped to you via USPS flat rate.  If you are outside of the US, it will be whatever the incremental cost is.

I need to do an order for them to manufacture the plungers.  I will carry the costs and assume that I can get enough takers to make it work.

Once i get a feel for how many you guys will want, i will place the order and get it all started.

I already have the o rings and wrenches.

I am not a business and this is just a way to help all of us with these valves that have caused us so many issues.  The only guarantee is that they are the right parts.

if you have questions let me know

the biggest issue with our systems is contamination of the air systems.  it gets to the valve and scores the seat.

I am planning on probably doing a buy such that i will have 30 kits available.  basically 200 valves worth....

I am not asking for money up front, just want to know if you are strongly interested.

the best way would be to email me at [email protected]

After reading Bill's post of the mini fire in his AC control panel, I thought to myself, that I should open both panels and snoop around. But, I didn't.

Last night the front AC wasn't blowing cold air. Today's investigation revealed an overheated and degraded splice in compressor number one wiring. It was a quick fix but it did bring up some things that I thought I would kindly mention.

I have had three similar occurences in my 9 year Newell ownership where an electrical connection degraded and melted. ALL were in the AC control boxes. There is a lot of current driving the compressors, and in my opinion the wiring on the boards and from the boards to the compressors in undersized. The bad connection at best creates heat and melts the wiring. At worst it just reduces voltage to the compressor and fries it instead. I could have easily had the same fire that Bill did.

The second location for electrical thermal issues is the 50 amp plug. The screws holding the wiring to the lugs loosen over time.

The point is to add these locations to things you check from time.

When we get home, I have a AC project that I will report on. With input from Russ I am going to add external high amperage contactors for the compressors similar to what you would find on a home unit. I also will replace in the splice in the system with soldered connections.

I was just hanging out on Woodward watching the cruise cars (yeah I know the Dream Cruise doesn't start until Friday night but don't tell that to the thousands of cars already cruising) and along comes a very early vintage front engine Newell. It was looking good. Is this a great event or what.

If you haven't heard, the Woodward Dream Cruise is the largest one day car event in the world. 32,000 cars (and at least one Newell) and more than a million people. It takes place on Woodward Avenue just north of Detroit.

hi,

here are the two setups i made to test for air loss.  the line is just screwed on the double gauge setup to prevent me getting whipped with it.

you would put this inbetween where you are trying to isolate a pressure loss.

then you turn the valve off and you can see which side is losing pressure.

the smaller one is an inline one for checking pressure
