I developed a buzzing or whirring noise from the engine compartment that tracked engine RPM. At approximately the same time I noticed the engine running about 10 degrees cooler than normal and the fuel mileage dropped about O.5 mpg.

Normally when the engine runs cool and the mileage drops I suspect the coil that opens the low speed circuit for the fan has died. The default position of the hi lo valve is hi. This is the valve and coil on the side of the brass block at lower left of engine. The hoses from the hyd pump enter the block and the hoses to and fro the fan motor enter the bottom of the block.

So, the coil failed the first test. A steel washer wouldn't stick to it with the ignition on. It also failed a more scientific test when it ohmed as an open circuit. I replaced the coil. BTW, it is Eaton 300AA0095A MCSCJ012DW0B0010.

That didn't fix the cool engine or the buzz. I put a mechanics stethoscope on everything back there, and the loudest origin was at the hose ends for the fan. I found some obscure posts on hydraulic systems that mentioned that leaking valves can cause noise in hyd systems. I ordered and replaced the valve. It's a Vickers part SV-16-c-0-0.  I didn't take the old one out till I had the new one so I could do a quick swap and minimize fluid loss. The old valve would only open a small stroke. The problem was solved with the new valve. Buzz  is gone, and engine temps are back to normal.

Hopefully this will help someone in the future.

Near my storage unit where I store our coach there is a two lane road with a bridge about 12' long over a small creek.  I just noticed a sign that says 11 ton weight limit.  Does anyone know if weight limit signs are per axle limit or total vehicle weight limit?  Or is it neither and a weight limit that the bridge "sees" such as both rear axles on bridge at the same time but not front axle as it would be off the bridge by the time the rear axles cross?

A 300' bridge with weight limit sign seems like it would be total vehicle weight limit vs a small bridge that doesn't accompdate all axles.

I have incidentally driven over the bridge a few times with no issue but now that I've noticed the sign I'm concerned a little.

Anyone ever had their coach towed. Waiting on tow truck now on side of road. Haggling with moorons on the phone.

Hello, this seems like a great and knowledgeable group, I will appreciate any insights you may have.

I've been dreaming of owning and living full time in a luxury coach probably since I first saw one as a child. I'm seriously considering making that dream a reality by purchasing a Newell. The unit i'm considering is a 1997, coach #453. It looks good in the pictures I've seen, I'm just trying to gather as much information as possible. My biggest concern is that it has some water damage on the inside trim pieces of the slide out. The seller claims that the previous owner took it back to Newell to have the slide seals repaired, I guess there would be records of such things. I'm wondering how reliable the slide out systems are on units of this generation?

What are the things I should be looking out for as potential problems? I'm very technical, and familiar with heavy-duty diesel systems.

This is just a start I guess, I'll definitely have more specific questions at some point, just testing the waters.

Thanks.

Today was my turn for a head scratcher. I could not get the HWH system to go into level mode. The travel solenoids would not energize. I set the ride heights manually with the leveling pad and drove for a while. At the rest stop I thought I would do a little troubleshooting while taking a break from driving. I checked every fuse I could find with none found open. Not really understanding the system, I thought maybe it was connected to the slide out not locking since my leveling light and emergency brake light has been on for a year. So I deployed the slide. BIG MISTAKE !!!!!!!!  There is a very good reason to only deploy in travel mode. The coach was torqued and it racked the slide. I couldn't get it back in without one upper corner being over an inch out of flush.

I tried a couple of times to untorque the chassis with the manual leveling but no dice.

So, I made a jumper wire with a switch and I hot wired one of the travel solenoids to 12V. They are all tied together so that forced the coach into travel mode kind of. When the coach was leveled, I cycled the slide several times and it squared itself.

When we stopped for the evening. I went hunting for a miracle. Since I had the hot wire to the travel solenoids, I measured terminal 75 on the HWH board. It now has 12v, so that told me the problem was not downstream of the HWH brain box. There is a fuse on the back the leveling board that I has previously checked visually but with more time I thought I would ohm all the fuses. When I moved the board to access the fuse, the travel solenoids clicked on, and the LEDs for travel lit up. Hmmm, maybe a loose connection.

Here are pics of what I found. A burned connection and a bad solder joint on the board for that particular connection. It is the 12v supply to the solenoids. I don't know which came first the bad connection which melted the solder joint, or vice versa.

Anyhoo, I resoldered the joint, and cleaned the connector. All seems to be good now.

Forum: Big Rig Friendly places to go
- No Replies

i wanted a place to go for a few days after staying in shingle springs, ca before we went to tahoe.

i looked in big rig friendly book and this place was the only one near.

it is the coolest park.  small, but pristine, in the mountains, grass, paved spots, trees, super clean,  easy in and out.

wes, the owner gave us two back in spots that make a 100 foot long pull through.

we are sitting outside in the cool breeze after visiting with some fellow rv'r for quite a while.

larry, i went down and said hi to wes for you.

i highly recommend this place.  and it is very reasonably prices.  like 35 bucks or something like that.

and for the first time in a week, i have a clear enough view for the sat dish to lock on.....

we are here till friday when we head to tahoe.

the drive here was pretty, but quite windy and narrow roads all the way.  but ok.

tom

If anybody has some old A/D/S equipment that you want to sell I might be interested. As some of you know I'm restoring a 1993 Newell that was vandalized. Many of the components were damaged. Even if what you have is broken I may be interested. Feel free to PM me.
