We are in Armitage Park, a county park on the edge of Eugene. Nice pull through site with good water and power. I didn't expect much from a county park, but I was wrong. This is a nice stop if you are traveling I-5.

I was lucky in that the rear air bag failed in a campground. The failure was caused by fluid leaking from the rear slide hoses onto the front of the two rear air bags in the driver side rear wheel well. The rubber in the bag was softened by the ATF and the bag simply delaminated.

The coach sits flat on the wheels when this happens. Duh.

Newell overnighted a bag at a respectable price.

Here are a few tricks I learned and used in the removal and replacement. I had to use both of my 20 ton bottle jacks under the radius arm mount in order to lift the coach. Of course, I chocked the coach with wooden cribbing. As Steve posted in the other thread about rear bags, there are two studs on top, and one on bottom. A 3/4 wrench removed those easily. And the connection to the air fitting was handled with a big adjustable wrench. The removal process went south at this point. There is a 45 degree angle fitting on top of the bag that would not turn, and the bag will not come out of hole without removing the fitting. I could only get a 1 1/2 wrench on the fitting at two angles, neither of which would give me any leverage way up in the frame rail where the fitting is located. It is really tight up in there working around the differential and hydraulic fan cooler.

I eventually cut it off with a side grinder and cutting wheel. Ugly, but effective.

Then while at the local hydraulic place getting a replacement fitting, which by the way is  45 degree 1"NPT by 1" JIC (16), I had a eureka moment. The place had a big selection of crow's feet wrenches. This is the point of the post. The crows feet allow many different angles of approach when used with a flex head breaker bar. It was a piece of cake tightening the new fitting into the air bag, and tightening the air line connection using the crows feet. One of those wrenches in the right size would have saved me four or more hours of vocabulary creativity enhancement.

So check the wheel well if you have a two slide HWH coach to make sure lines aren't leaking on the air bag. The failure would have been nasty on the road. And, if you take replacement of the air bags on yourself, think about getting a few crow's feet to fit the air line fittings.

Now, I have to figure out how to access the hose where it attaches to the cylinder. I know, under the bed, but it's under the part of the bed that doesn't lift.

The new owner of my 98 sent a few pictures of the interior remodel he had done at Motorhomes of Texas.  I thought the front floor would be of interest to those of you who want to get rid of carpet.  Or at least most of the carpet.

Dropping off the Coach next month at the Newell factory for service and maintenance, after they finish the wife and I are going to spend a few days in Branson-Table Rock Lake area mainly to play golf and enjoy the sites. Any suggestions on Newell friendly RV parks and maybe a golf course or two?

Thanks,

I didn't get a good look, we passed each other on a hilltop, pretty sure it was a newer Newell, brown, towing a pick up with a razor in the bed.
This past Sunday, mid day.
Anyone here?

Scott

I just joined just today and have a 1987 38FT Newell which has been sitting in storage for some time. Plugged into shore power and run occasionaly. I just don't use it enough anymore. I tried to bring it home for a wash and got about 3 miles and it quit. I pulled over and removed the primary fuel filter and noticed the fuel was down about 3 inches, I installed a new spare, full of fuel, then removed the secondary filter, it was full, I replaced it with a new filter and filled with fuel. The coach started imediately and off I went happy. About 3 miles again it quit. Again I removed the primary filter and it was the fuel was down 3 inches, another new filter, full of fuel was installed. The secondary filter was full of fuel but I replaced in with another filter and filled it with fuel. I made it home and it is now parked. There is plenty of fuel treated with Startron on board. The water seperators do not look like they have water but the glass is clouded and I could not really tell much. I looked in the top of both fuel tanks and thought I saw some floating material. I think I am having a fuel starvation problem as the primary filter is always low when I pull it, the air might interupt the fuel flow or cause the engine driven pump to cavitate. I am thinking I will have to have it towed to the nearest capable repair facility 30 miles away and have it defueled and the system back flushed, maybe somehow cleaning the tanks. I am looking for some experienced advice and recomendations of how to proceed. I live in a restricted residential area, it is sitting in a field accross from my house and is not welcome.
Thanks for replies.
Brian

Hey guys

I have an 84 as many of you know. Being one of the Guru's in the middle of a career with kids at home we are just now taking it out for the first time this summer. Yes you read that correctly. You retired guys kill me!

Anyways I am looking for tire pressure recommendations from you all. I don't have a tag on this coach and the tires are Goodyear 11R24.5. I think they are aired a little too much based on my memory, but i had it in getting a tire with a bad valve fixed and the guys aired them all up. The front are at about 122 and the 4 in the rear are all about 100. A couple of years ago Clarke and I had them at 105 in the front and 90 in the back because he also thought they road a little stiff. I was going to set them back to this but before I did I thought I would see what recommendations you all might have for me. We will be driving 2,000 miles I imagine from our place to Yellowstone and back.

Don't ask me the weight of the coach. I can't recall what it was the last time I weighed it. Seems to me ideas packed and probably 2,000 lbs short of the maximum possibly.

Thanks for your help!

If this works I have attached a pic of the tag from the coach showing max weight and recommended air.

My pure and waste water tank indicators would not go below 40% even when empty, after flushing the waste tank and completely emptying the pure tank they now both show both 100% full.  The indication is the same at the gage at the wet bay and in the galley.  Is there a computer in this system that can be re-booted?
