Forum: Discussion about what to consider on buying a used Newell
- Replies (11)

Hello everyone. So my wife and I just started our Newell search, but I am kind of already ate up with it. Spending all my free time on the net looking at what's out there and reading all of the Newell guru posts I can. Looked at a 95 (#379) yesterday. Needs lots  and lots of work. It has been parked for a very long time (not enclosed but under cover).
1. Needs all new tires,
2. both windshields need to be replaced.
3. All (and I mean every) bay doors do not close properly, will not stay open unless you engage the safety latch and are either missing the lock mechanism of will not lock.
4.Need new engine and house batteries.
5.All of the furniture needs to be replaced or recovered.
6.There is a crack in the top edge of the rear fiberglass cap.
7. Water stains around most of the Windows but I don't think they are leaking. I think this is due to moisture build from sitting so long without being aired out.
8. ]The generator would turn over but not start but the coach fuel level was below a quarter tank so that might be the culprit. It would start if sprayed with some starter fluid.
 The good news.
We were able to get it started with just a jump from.my truck
( A little concerned about the mileage. According to the title, it had 149,700 miles on it when it was purchased in 2011. Now it only has 149,800. So supposedly it has only been driven 100 miles in 9 years.  I
Airbags worked and all system gauges indicated everything was functioning properly. We let it run for 30 plus minutes. For as much as I know, air pressure was good, temp was good, etc.air ride appeared to go into travel mode and adjusted. However, due to the condition of the tires, we did drive it.

I guess what I am generally looking for from the gurus is an overall impression based on my description. And maybe an opinion as what some of these repairs might cost. I can do some of the work myself but I do not have a shop or the expertise to do the real technical stuff.

I'm torn. There are several coaches in my price range that appear to be in much better shape and are road ready. But if I think I can get this one for a good price.

Any and all thoughts  will be greatly appreciated.
There's a lot more to list but this a cholesterol start.
Thanks, Tony Huh

Howdy all! Looking for the starter relay to test a no start no crank situation. I was looking for that shiny can object, but can't find one. So far I have load tested the batteries (one bad one, replaced), load tested the starter from the batteries (very little voltage drop, or I'm doing it wrong).
I am enclosing images of what I think I am looking at in the engine compartment with the possible relays outlined. Thoughts? Thanks!

Saw a Newell headed east on CO 160 at 130 PM yesterday 9/25/2020 about 20 miles east of the Great Sand Dunes National Park. We were headed west so could not determine the year of the coach.

Figured I would share my experiences as a new coach owner.  I purchased the coach about 4 weeks ago and had our maiden voyage on Labor Day week.  Like any custom coach all the fun is figuring out what you don’t know and working your way thru the “user errors” to figure out what really needs looking at - we had a full week of that.

Coach 1511 spent last week in Miami Ok getting a once over by the team there and an updated annual/new owner service.  The folks at Newell are so amazing and accommodating - its a really nice buying a product that the company stands by.  Of course the team at Newell finished my 52 item punch list and I was figuring I may have the coach “zeroed out”.  Well not so fast - LOL.

The coach got back to NY yesterday (where I live - as I sent it to Ok with a driver).  As luck would have it, I was doing my walk around inspection and when I went into the utility bay I could hear an air leak in the Valid slide control manifold.  Fortunately (and some coincidence), I had just watched the 12 part series on Newell Coach air systems basics and tools that was recorded at the Newell Guru gathering.  The picture below of the manifold is where my leaks are - all four of the press fittings are leaking (enough to be audible and used soapy water to confirm).

The fix (thanks Richard) is replacing the leaking press fittings with straight DOT compression fittings at the manifold (1/4 pipe by 1/4 NPT) and probably replacing the lines because Newell cut them so short there is no slack for the fix.  Probably also replace the elbow fittings on the other side (with DOT compression fittings).  Looking forward to getting under the coach and finding the other connection points on the air lines and slowly replacing them with compression fittings.  I also got a list of items from Richard to purchase (I went to McMaster on-line) to keep in the coach for both long term and quick fixes to get me rolling.

Here is the list from Richard -

“So your shopping list should include
1/4 tubing by 1/4 NPT    These are the most common on my coach
1/4 tubing and 1/4 NPT elbow.  Second most common
3/8 tubing by 1/4 NPT
3/8 tubing by 1/4 NPT elbow
Get a roll of 1/4 DOT tubing
Get a roll of 3/8 DOTtubing but will never use it all.

Now here is the get you out of trouble stuff.

Get some 1/4 by 1/4 tubing connectors for splicing a line with a hole in it
Get some 3/8 by 3/8 connectors also

And finally the really handy in stuck on the side of the road situation.
Get the same connectors as above but in PUSH ON
And finally get a few plugs of 1/4 and 3/8, they will be at the bottom of the page for push to connect fittings. The neat trick is to use a push on connector and a plug to quickly cap a line. Sometimes you just need to stop the air leak to get going. The quick way is pull the air line out of the existing fitting, put a push on straight connector on it, and then use the plug on the other end of the connector. It will save your bacon.”

Hello, I'm new here and hope that this is the vast collection of Newell knowledge I ve heard it is.  I'm looking at mid 90s (95 96 97) coaches and need information on what they should of had for equipment when built. Things like type and number of batteries, do they have solar, aqua hot, is fridge residential or nevercold, tire sizes, and anything to look at when checking them out. Is there anyone to give me specifics if I have a VIN.?  I just recently began to consider Newells after a couple came on the market within my price range, previously I considered them out of my reach. Because of this I know very little about them. Confused
I would appreciate any information to help me make an informed decision

So I have been in the fix it phase which just may be always lol, I was concerned that my air assist dump hose was inop. so I called drain master to get an idea on what could be the issue. I told the sales person that I had a leaking hose, she tells me the system will not work without and air tight system.

The P.O. removed the original green hose maybe cause it was bad, anyway they cut the old system apart and purchase some of the low end dump hose and made it fit. So my brand new hose assembly arrives today and I disassemble the crappy hose. The new hose fittings will not fit through the cylinder in the tank that runs from the driver to pass side to where the hose actually connect too!

I love the Newell but I am starting to wonder if they ever expected anyone other than themselves to work on it. This should be a very easy task! Now Im stuck and will have to wait until monday to figure out why???????

Ill post some pics later

I am in the process of upgrading the Con Met fuel /water separators to Racor /turbine type units with replaceable filters .
I am currently casting about for the correct plumbing for the engine fuel hoses before removing them from the existing separator . The hoses from tank and engine have female swivel ends , thread is 1 1/16 -12  , which I believe to be 3/4 , size 12 ( on the racer it would be AN dash 12 ). I assumed the fittings would be JIC 37 degree , but the hose end clearly has SAE stamped on it , which I believe to be a 45 degree fitting . The JIC fittings are readily available , SAE not so much . Wondering if anyone could shed light ?
Hope everyone is well out there !
Thanks,
Chris
