As with many people on the forum I am interested in increasing the performance of the air conditioner system.  The first thing I thought of was to collect data. So here is what I did.  I have 2 two speed units that are from the factory with original thermostats

It was late afternoon when we started the test (4:45), and collected data for 1hr 50 min.  The data I was collecting mostly was bedroom and salon thermostat and duct exhaust temperatures on a regular basis to plot the cool down rate. Midway through the test I decided to start recording the carpet near the A/C inlet in the entryway.  I also collected the power usage delivered (5400-5200W on high) during the entire test.

It was only 93F outside when I started the test, nowhere near the hottest temperature it gets to in Phoenix.

Here are some of my notes as I would summarize them, but I don't know if this shows the system is good or not:

  1. I am guessing that the a/c units are working well, but never were cold enough for Phoenix.
  2. The coach did not change power consumption much during test but was lower as the temp dropped inside.  
  3. Prior to testing, I checked power consumption of each unit.  They drew about the same power.  My guess is the performance is about the same for the 2 units.
  4. As the indicated thermostat temp dropped, the duct exit temperatures continued to drop as well.  Always staying at 30-35 degrees different between thermostat and duct exhaust temp and 20-25 degrees between inlet carpet near the step and duct exhaust.
  5. Because of the location of the thermostats (front mounted on outside wall next to passenger seat, back mounted closet wall interior wall) the front thermostat gets heat from outside and will normally be very different.  During test however the exterior next to thermostat did not pick up that heat as it was in the shade the entire time so started out warmer than the back thermostat but ended up about the same.
  6. On low setting, the temp started to rise, but I only did it for 10 minutes at the end of testing
  7. During the entire test, the temperature continued to drop, so the coach would have gotten cooler with more time.  It is likely when I anticipate needing air conditioning I should turn it on several hours in advance to precool as much as I can.
  8. Temp inside seemed acceptable, but we were not at 115 and heat soaked from the engine running.  At these conditions I know it gets and stays uncomfortably warm.

So what could someone do to improve the cooling?  I know that it has been a while since I cleaned the inlet filter and I plan on doing just that to start.  In addition:
  1. Possibly changing out a vent for a roof 48V AC would increase cooling capacity. It might be fairly easy to vent out of holes next to refrigerator.  
  2. I think I saw somewhere that putting a fan under the coach helps with lowering temp under there to increase heat transfer on the outside unit
  3. Rip the whole basement system out and replace with mini splits like some of the adventurous gurus have done.  Lots of nice work out there.
  4. Looking for suggestions

We are going on a 62 day Alaska trip next year.  I am hesitant to take our Coach on the trip (due to road conditions) on the trip and I am considering buying an older class A for the trip.  I have talked to many people and the opinions vary from " you will be fine" to I would never take a Newell on the trip.

I am looking for folks with actual experience to give me their opinions.

The other day I was exercising the generator and testing for a random shutoff condition.  I was going to be working in the front two bays for awhile, so I would be close by to pay attention to it when it shut off.  I have a 20KW Kubota
The Genny started fine within two crank cycles and ran smooth.  I ran an ac to put an 8amp load on it.  No issues for about 2 hours.  Then, I could hear it start to run a little rough, maybe 30 seconds for me to recognize it, started to run a little rougher, I went inside to look at the gauges, Temp good at 180, oi pressure good and it died.  Tried to restart and no go.  Genny was serviced last August.  An hour later, the Genny started right up, ran fine.

So my questions are:
Is there a Owners manual for these things or a service manual?   
From a few threads I read, It could be Low coolant, or a fuel shut off solenoid?  How do I test this solenoid?
Other suggestions?

I know very little of diesels, but can certainly turn a wrench.

I’m trying to sort out the AC systems in my coach. I have a thermostat that appears to be a Coleman thermostat in the galley of my coach, then I have an older looking thermostat in the bedroom. Each location also contains a rocker switch labeled 1AC or 2AC. I can get the systems running no problem. The galley thermostat also appears to control my salon heating zone. And the bedroom controls the heating zone for the bedroom.  The galley and bathrooms have their own dial set heat thermostats. 
I don’t understand the rockers to select between 1 unit and 2 units at each location. I’m feeling like I’m not getting any cooling from the units at all but do hear the systems kicking on.  So I’m trying to learn the basics before I dive into troubleshooting to make sure I’m operating them correctly.

Lucky me, 3rd day of a 4 month journey and have the inlet NOx sensor code.  It is a code that will derate the engine 25% after one hour, 40% after 5 hours and then 5MPH eventually..  I deleted the code which gives a little time, I don't want to stop hourly to delete it.  Hopefully Farmington, NM Cummins has the NOx sensor, we are in Gallup tonight on the way to Durango, CO for the weekend.

Has anyone attempted to add the newer style power slide tray buttons to the edge of the bay door?  Don’t think it will be too hard to do but didn’t want to reinvent the wheel if some has already figured out the best way to accomplish this.  The existing button on the inside of the bay is too hard to reach when the slides are out and the remote has to be pointed at the receiver which can be a pain if you have the tray stacked full.

Alternatively if anyone has replaced their remote receiver with one that uses a radio signal instead of infrared that would also solve the issue to some degree.

The best solution will be to ditch the remote and add the button to the edge of the bay door.

I have a one year old Gast compressor I bought at Grainger for just over 1k. Although it is somewhat new, it will need a going over. Produces air but it was never the quietest pump on the block. I have since replaced it with a California Air compressor. Make me any offer. It's in the garage waiting for a new home. Mesa AZ location. Although it is a year old, My coach was not left with the pump running full time. This has very little use.

I'm switching my house batteries to Lithium.  Trying to figure out the best way to install protection for the Alternator if I leave it hooked up to the house battery bank.  I know the low charge resistance of the lithium batteries will cause the alternator to burn out.  What I don't know is the best way to deal with it and how to actually do it.

For now I am leaving my house system as a 12v system to simply the install and to keep the price down. I will continue using my existing inverter and won't need a DC to DC inverter to feed the 12v house systems and can hook them up directly to my 12v bus bar.

So my questions:

How and where is the alternator usually wired into the house system on Newells or your Newell?

What equipment would you recommend I install to protect my alternator? And details on how to install said equipment.

Or do I even need to hook the alternator up to the house battery bank?  What are the cons to disconnecting the house side from the alternator completely and only using it to charge the engine batteries?  I know some of them but I'm sure your collective wisdom can enlighten me.
