After reading the posts about the SilverLeaf on this forum, I finally got the program.  I elected to get the 6 plug/ 4 wire without the adapter thinking I'd just hard wire it, but I found the coach diagnostic plug has 7 wires - any guess what the additional 3 do?

We are having a succession of difficulties with dash heat and AC controls in our '89 (coach #197).

The problem began when we had the AC compressor) replaced and the AC condensor fans rehabed a couple of years ago. After that, we noticed that, even if the controls are set to off, either the AC condensor fans are running or the front heater pump under the coach is running whenever the ignition is turned on. I took it in to have that fixed this month, and the tech worked on the front controls, concluding that the pushbutton control (Delco 3610-501) might be defective. He did not have the part, and could not solve the problem.

During the work, he disconnected the various spade connector wires running to the controls and attempted to substitute the control panel with a newer model that had a different array of spade connections. It didn't work, so he had to put the original push button control back in. When he was done, I don't think he was sure whether he reconnected them to the original spades. Since that attempt was made, we have lost all dash heat. The fans run for the heater and the defroster, but no heat comes. Weather conditions prevent us from determining whether the AC is really Working. I checked the lever valve (on the heater hose near the front pump under the passenger side of the coach) that permits coolant to go to the heater core, and the lever works and is connected to the cable coming from the dash controls.

I am suspecting that the issue may be in the dash control. Does anyone have any ideas?

I could really use a diagram of which wires should be running to which spades on the rear of the controls. Thanks, Dick and Maura Quirk ([email protected])

Hi all,

My steering box has been quite sloppy since I purchased our coach in 2013 but it didn't make it to the top of the priority list of repairs until it started leaking this fall.  I pulled the box to have it rebuilt and found the following information.

The box was built by R H Sheppard and is a Model 39BL3

R H Sheppard is still in business

R H Sheppard has not had hard parts for this box for decades and cannot rebuild the box.  BEWARE if anyone tells you the box can be rebuilt as R H Sheppard has heard many times of supposed rebuilds consisting only of the seals being replaced and a new coat of paint while being charged over $1000.00

Newell contracted Sheppard in the late 1990's to manufacture a direct replacement box for the Model 39

The replacement box is 392SKB4R

These are still available in rebuilt condition from Sheppard ($1180.65 plus shipping)

This information was provided to me by:

Hopefully this will help the 3 people left in the world sick enough to spend this kind of money keeping their 70's Newell's running down the road.

The replacement box should show up next week, if there are any problems with operation or fitment I'll update this post.

Have the standard 12.5kw Kohler genset in our '87 Newell. Looking to either rebuild or replace the controller.

Ran across this controller that I'm looking @ for a replacement - but if I can find a 'kit' w/all the relays switches I might go that route also.

Any advice/opinions?

marc

I used to have a 1988 Newell 40' single axle, #174 if I remember correctly.  We loved it, used it a lot for about 8 years, and sold it after buying a 1999 Prevost XL40 Royale.  Have enjoyed it as well for about 4 years, but are now considering newer, 2001 to maybe 2008 - Newell again this time.  45 will probably be all there is, and everything of those years will have slides I imagine.  I am not familiar with that many coaches with slides, but most I have been in are not very usable until the slides are out.  We often stop in rest areas, Cracker Barrels, state parks, etc., often for one night only, and will not be opening the slides for various reasons.  I have seen a 2 slide Newell with both slides street side, and it was still quite roomy unopened. Have not been inside one, but have also seen 3 slide floor plans with 2 of the slides in the rear bedroom, along each side of the bed, and it would seem to work okay while closed.  Anyway, I wanted to rejoin your group and go back to learning from you while shopping for a Newell.  Thanks for your group and help.

What are some of using out there to detail your coachs? I have been using protect all which is applied with a applicator pad and polished within a half a minute with a micro fibre towel. All though this product does have some problems with hard water spots and moisture that runs off the roof ect. With so many products out there could some of you share your best product.  From posts in the past diamond brite I believe its called is the best for our rims but I could use some TLC ideas for the coach.
