Today I had my generator removed to replace the hydraulic hoses replaced which had ruptured.  It takes a forklift to be able to slide the generator out, but I can give some insight into what is required and how to do it with minimum effort when someone is required to to this.  It takes about 8 to 10 hours, so plan on $1,000.

Newell has redesigned their coaches with their new p50 series in honor of Newell Coaches 50th Anniversary. I have posted a comparison of early 2017 coaches and the new 2017 coaches on my website NewellOwner.com. Additional information and photos are available on the Newell Coach website.

I am posting this for two reasons. One to help anyone in the future with a similar problem, because this was a great learning experience for me. Two, to thank the guru support group who helped me solve the problem.

First of all, this was not a Newell, and no one was hurt. While visiting the inlaws, a friend of theirs who recently bought a new motorhome, called and said while washing the coach that it shocked them. They knew I was in town and asked for help since the coach had been at CW for a month, and they were leaving in two days for a trip. They didn't want to repeat the CW experience.

When I got there the owner had a voltmeter showing about 20 volts AC from the hubcab to another probe stuck in the ground. I guess that did buzz when washing the coach in barefeet.

We pulled the cover on the transfer switch, and the voltages on the neutral, hot 1, and hot 2 were all good. However, the prob from ground to neutral in the xfer box showed 30V AC.

Tom and Forrest suggested running the gennie. The problem did not exist with the gennie.

There were no apparent problems with the 50 amp plug in box. There were several 50 amp extension cords used to reach the coach. All of the plugs were wired correctly and by partially plugging them I was able to get the probes on the lugs. Ground to neutral was zero on all plugs in the extension as it should be.

Hmmmmmmmmmm.  So it has to be between the xfer box and the outside connection. The coach used a marine style connection instead of a hardwired cable like the Newells. The owner thought I was quite daft when I took the connection off the coach. It appeared that everything was wired correctly. I tightened all the lugs with no change. I did notice that the ground wire appeared to be too loose in the connection. When we completely removed the connection it was obvious what had happened. The ground wire was inserted into the blind hole on the WRONG side of the tightening clamp. Easy fix now.

Thanks to the boys for helping me and the owner out of a very perplexing problem. The strategy of cutting the electrical problem in half until you find it worked yet again.

The key learning for me was that if there is a charge on the chassis when plugged in, even though the neutral and ground are not bonded, that the ground circuit back to the power source is interrupted somehow somewhere. The other learning, probably easily explained by the EEs, is that the charge between neutral and ground was 100% correlated to the refrigerator compressor running. Frig on, 30 Volts neutral to ground, Frig off 4 Volts neutral to ground. After repairing the ground connection at the plug, 0 volts in all situations.

Good morning all! It's a beautiful day is Northern AZ, it almost always is! My name is Matt Kightlinger. I am not a Newell owner but I am trying to help someone sell one. I work for an auto dealer and the owner of the coach is a friend of the dealer. Her husband recently passed away and she will never use it without him.

I would really apprehciate any info I could get about her coach. I know some of the basics but it seams there is a whole lot more to these things than meets the eye!

It is a 1983 and I messure 40'
Here is the VIN 1N9908272D1011002

Thank you for any and all info!

i had not used the RF Mogul HD self aligning sat dish since last summer.  so i put the direct tv receivers in the newell and took off on our trip.  first night and i couldnt get the dish to align.  it did it until the motor overheated and shut down.

i have the RF Mogul RFM1100 system that i installed about 3 years ago.

i contacted them and they said that direct tv had changed their sat last fall and my system cannot find it and was not upgradeable.  their first gen system was outsourced to a korean company and they were no longer supporting them.

so i had to upgrade the control box, lnb etc.  i have it being shipped to steve mogowns so i can install it before i leave here.  on this one they said they are doing all the manufacturing themselves and give a lifetime warranty on it.

A couple of years ago, my digital Coolant Temp Gauge stopped working on the console over the drivers head.

i just didnt worry about it.  so it was on my list while on this trip to fix.  i am at steve magowns place and forest and cindy are here too.  i am outlining my fix so that those that chase electrical problems can perhaps learn how to break things into bite sized chunks.

the gauge lights up but shows LO all the time for temp, which means it is not getting a signal.  so....first thing i did was to run a jumper from the sensor on the genny directly to the gauge.  that worked.  so that means the wire between the two is bad somewhere.

i found the color of the wire off the gauge and found the same wire behind the drivers side floor kickplate panel under the dash where it comes down the window channel.  the wire ohmed good between the gauge and the floor....so the wire is fine there.

then we found the wire in the genny control box in the passenger side compartment where the genny blower is.  it ohmed good between the genny sensor and the control box.  so that part of the wire was good.  that was a relief as it would have been hard to run a new wire there.

then we ohmed the wire between that genny control box and at the drivers kick panel below the steering wheel dash and it was bad.  so that meant we needed to replace the wire between the control box and the place right under the steering wheel under the dash where it goes up the window channel.

so...(btw, forest was helping with all of this...much easier with two people).   we pushed a 3/8" piece of dot brake tubing through the foam where the headlight wires come  over the headlights to behind the fuse panel behind the passenger feet kickpanel.  we drilled a hole through the firewall to the genny compartment and fed the brake tubing like flexible conduit to the genny control box.  that made it easy to feed a new 16 gauge wire from the control box to up through the floor to the area behind the fuse panel in the passenger feet area.

fortunately i had left a pull string between the two sides of the dash when i rewired the headlights.  so we pulled the wire over to the drivers side, making sure we left the pull string there for next time.

i put a lug on the wire and put it in the control box and closed it up, then spliced the other end under the drivers kick panel to the wire going up to the gauge over the drivers head and wallah....all fixed.  took a while, but got her done...

as you can see, we just broke the troubleshooting into small pieces.  is pretty easy that way

1984 Newell Motorcoach

This RV has a 450 HP Detroit V8 Diesel with automatic transmission. Engine was freshly rebuilt and has very few miles since rebuild. New batteries were installed 2 weeks ago. The RV was completely detailed last week and is in great condition. The room seams on the roof have been re-caulked.

Features: Backup Camera, 2 flat screen TVs, Sony in dash AM/FM/CD, awnings, diesel generator, dual A/C units, solid surface countertops, full basement storage, a booth style dinette and fold out sofa that both convert to beds and much much more!

Originally built for and owned by Al Unser Sr. a famous Indy race car driver!

The bad: The belt for the compressor on the engine is missing so the dash A/C is non-functional, the walls beside the entry appear to be rotted and the wall paper is peeling, the rear bumper has damage at both corners.

Overall, this RV is in great shape for its age. Newell Motorcoaches are the absolute top of the line and this one has a well-documented provenance. DON’T MISS YOUR CHANCE TO OWN AN AMAZING AND FUNCTIONAL PIECE OF AUTO RACING HISTORY!

RV is currently at Crank Ape in Valdosta, GA and will go up in an online auction available May 25th to June 1st.

Walkthrough video can be seen here:
