Hello from Virginia Beach, my wife (Jo) and I (Jim) are fairly new owners of a 2001 Newell Coach (Unit #603).  We purchased in March of 2020 and have already booked over 10,000 miles.  We aren't new to RVing we previously had a 2006 American Eagle for over 10 years and prior to that we had a 40' Foretravel.
In June we traveled to Miami, OK to have a few items corrected and checked on the coach, we had a wonderful experience. We have plans to stay very busy with our coach seeing the rest of the United States.

Thanks for allowing us to join.

Jim and Jo Halvorson

Found this for sale on Facebook in case anyone is interested! Kind of strange because it says 1985 Prevost but it is a Newell. I spoke to the owner about it when we first started looking at Newells and at that time the post said it was a Newell. I don't know if he is just trying to get a different audience to look survivor what.. If I remember correctly, he stated that it runs good but it does not have a generator. My guess is that it could be had for much less than the listed selling price.

All,
Disclaimer Alert: For information only not responsible if you decide to attempt this procedure

Well we were getting ready for a trip in the next week or so.  Found a rolled #1 slide seal....(have installed the vac pump mod last year).  New seal in 2017 at Newell. Tried to get the slide back in do the Windex trick to get the seal re-seated in the track.  The seal was folded and twisted which caught under the stainless steel slide plate thus cutting the seal....dang it.  No time to do a run to Miami or get on the schedule with Chris so DIY made a lot of sense.

Read the post, thoroughly, of you all changing your own slide seals.  Plan "B" was to build a wood slide lift table but first tried using my hydraulic lift table(s)....rated at 1,000# ea.  Built up some cribbing (lots of screws) on top of the table making sure it would not shift in any way.  Did several trial lifts adjusting the cribbing as I went.  One table could lift the whole slide so I felt pretty confident that two would be a safe bet.

Working solo, I methodically removed all the interior pieces as required then moved on to the outside stuff.  My slide actuators are attached on the passenger side.  (I made some V blocks to keep the threaded portion in alignment with the mount) working solo this would have been impossible with out help.

So moving the slide out of position I could not manually push it out.  I used a Hi-Lift Jack on the inside to inch it out slowly checking everything as it progressed.  Note: took one of the phenolic blocks and shims off to get a flat solid purchase for the jack base....a 2x6 on the other end for the jack tongue.  With the slide clear of the coach and fully supported by the hydraulic tables removing the old seal and moving the pre-positioned new seal into place was straight forward work.

Once finished with the seal I was prepared to call all the neighbors, but first thought I'd give it a try myself.  The slide moved so easy I just kept going.  The actuator ends fell into their respective mounts due to the V-blocks....selfie hi 5s were in order on this one!

Will finish up tomorrow with the interior stuff.

In a pinch, a salon seal change can be done solo with the right tools and safety adherence.

The takeaway for you all....if you don;t have a hydraulic table get one they a real handy!  Something I did not do but will figure out a method to install a safety device in the event the hydraulics give way.

I ran into someone selling a 2003 Gillig Transit Bus motor-transmission-radiator basically this is a frame cut that has been in his building for 5 years. He runs a bus company in Dearborn close to Detroit. From the pictures it looks ok and it's supposed to run and all that stuff. Time will tell.

I'm hoping on some sage advice on what to check and what needs to be replaced or serviced. Due to the age and unknown nature I'll be doing an oil analysis first to confirm as much as I can. This is the CAPS Fuel System so it does have some weak area's right off the bat. I'll update the lift pump and will most likely be going through the engine and transmission - it was basically too cheap to pass up. It also has the side mount radiator which should be fun since mine is in the back.

Has anyone done the Fass or other upgrades? I don’t Newell had this as an engine option. I have heard of a few Guru’s doing a Cummins 8.3 upgrade on the older units like mine.

My coach currently has a Navstar 9.0 litre out of a school bus that was put in shortly before I bought it three years ago. I've been hoping to find an 8.3 mechanical injection engine - I've seen some, but in most cases either I'd have to buy an $8,000 bus to get one ot it was 3 or 4 states away.

I have lots of time to get this right, my coach won't be out till next year in the summer at the earliest plus the old diesel I have now runs great. I'd just like to have something that can get up the hills better and has the capability to engine brake going down. I don't think it has a Jake Brake on it since it was a transit bus. More to come on that if there's any interest.

Thanks in advance - John

My heat pumps are acting up, the living room unit runs but does not create any hot air and the rear unit has started making weird noises.  A couple nights ago it got down to 34 degrees F and I was running the rear unit with the fan set to run continuously at low speed.  After running fine for a number of hours the fan stopped but what sounded to me like the compressor kept running although it didn't sound quite right.  after about 3.5 minutes of this there was a loud air release sound, the compressor continued to run for another minute or so then the fan came back on heat once again flowed.  I tried to attach a audio file but it didn't work.

Hello Cat 13 owners

Recently my Dash AC compressor pulley bearing failed. I’ve replaced the pulley but the compressor seal may have been damaged as well.

There is not a data plate on the compressor.

If anyone with a Cat 13 Acert engine can send me the data plate info from the dash air AC Compressor I would appreciate it.

I have the 8 groove serpentine belt system.

Thank you!!!
JK
