Guys once this summer we pulled over because we thought we smelled propane. I used a propane detector and could not find anything. The smell ceased. I have had a gas detector alarm in the coach the last couple of years and it's never gone off. Which brings me to today.
The coach was winterized a week ago. I pulled it out of the barn today and drive it to my house to empty it of things for the winter. As I worked in some of the bays I kept getting a slight smell of propane. I checked and the main valve was closed. It has been closed for several weeks. We could smell it inside the coach a little as well. The tank is about half full.
Any ideas of how it could be creating a smell if it's shut off? I read online there is a pressure release valve. However, it seems that this only activates if the tank is overfilled. My tank is only half full so I assume it should not be venting right???
I think I will take it to the RV place here in town and have them hunt this smell down. Maybe do a pressure check to see if there is a leak. Any other ideas or suggestions guys? A gas leak scares the heck out of me.
Hi,
My name is Richard Watts and married to Marla Shelton-Watts.
Am retired with a horse farm in Ocala, FL.
Recently purchased a 2002 Newell. Coach #619. First coach ever.
We are complete novices.
This site has already been so helpful. Thank you. Love having a forum admin with the same year coach!!!
We've already put on 4000 miles and seem to come home with a list of "to dos" each trip.
Slowly knocking them off.
Will need to solve an annoying compressor noise and leak issue and I think the drive axle airbags.
Would love to understand when the 12v compressor is meant to operate vs the 110v (and when the engine compressor is working).
I think I have the prosine inverter figured out. That may be short lived.
Will post questions and progress and pix as we learn.
When I figure out how to change avatar, I'll post pix of coach.
Richard
We have the HWH air leveling system and I notice that once I have the coach set, level and the ignition key is off there is a lot of 'sway' in the coach when others are walking around. Is there a way to stiffen up the air bags or deflate them all the way so there is less sway? I miss the hydraulic levelers on our old coach... maybe I should get a couple of jack stands...
For your Info, if your inverter stops taking the 12 volts and making 120 volts. you might need to check the 300 amp. fuse that's near the inverter/charger. My charger was still working, but the inverter wouldn't invert. IN order to check the fuse you need to remove the two nuts that hold it, and remove the fuse. Now you can test for continuity. If you leave it hooked up it can give you a false reading, as it may have bleed back from both sides. Mine was blown when I had the batteries replaced. I found the only one in Tulsa for about $45. I hope this helps someone, it took me a couple of days to figure it all out.

Wow I'm reading about these folks who have recently purchased 1990's coaches and are having all this work done. My 1997 model is drive away ready and a steal at $69,000.00. Just returned from central Texas dove hunting with 10 friends aboard 1100 miles over a weekend no issues. See my coach at www.rvtrader.com "1997 Newell" in the search.

Newell has completed #1551, a quad slide, 45' 8" 2016 model 2020P. The coach has two couches, one extended to become the dinette with a power operated table. Porcelain tile flooring except in the bedroom. Mid entry.

It makes it much easier to answer someones question when they provide coach info and a name!
A while back Russ White posted a warning about the insulation on the 4/0 cable going from a positive battery post to the inverter fuse holder that was degrading & causing a potential fire hazard.
Russ' warning caused me to inspect mine since his & my coach are only 1 apart. Mine too was starting to degrade, but on a much lesser level than on Russ' coach. Mine continued to degrade until the inner stranded copper wire was clearly visible which was clearly a potential fire hazard. None of the other battery cables exhibited this degrading.
On my coach the 4/0 cable runs from the positive house battery post, out the back of the battery compartment, runs through the center of the coach and ends up in the inverter compartment and bolts up to one end of the inverter fuse. The old cable is tie wrapped and sealed in so I cut out as much as I could. I ran a new cable from the inverter compartment, through the plumbing compartment and into the battery compartment.
All is now working well and a fire hazard has been removed. Thanks Russ!
I would suggest that every one monitor the condition of the cable from the inverter fuse to the positive battery connection. For those with a '97, '98 or '99 I would suggest a very close inspection. It is my opinion, we know what that is worth, that this may be the result of some bad 4/0 cabling that Newell unknowingly purchased that is degrading in a very unusual manner. I have had several battery experts inspect the old cabling and none have seen this type of degrading without chemical interaction or extreme conditions not present in our coaches. While my cable was degrading in the battery compartment, it was degrading just as bad in the center coach run and the inverter compartment.
Please don't ignore a fire hazard.................................
Hello Newell gurus,
I recently purchased #1451,2012 Newell. I owned a 2005 Monaco before this. Every year I would
go to the Sturgis rally and drool all over my neighbors Newell. So, I stepped up.....way up!
And I purchased it this summer. I am so happy I did. What a difference in the ride and comfort.
My girlfriend and I love it! so do my riding buddies.
Sorry in advance if my questions seem stupid. But there is soooooo much more to learn on this unit
then my Monaco. I look forward to getting knowledge from all of you. And down the road maybe I can
help as well. I look forward to getting to know the gurus.
Thank you in advance
Guys when I shut down my engine a loud hissing noise is heard and can traced to the engine battery compartment. Pictured is the noise maker all air is dumped till the gauge reaches 0. Is this normal? It is not causing me any problems, just asking if this is supposed to happen. Thanks in advance for your comments.
