While searching for a classic Newell, I came across this listing.  This coach is still available and the price has been reduced.  If interested and cannot make contact, drop me a PM and I will put you in contact with seller.  It is located in Missouri and seems to be in very good condition.  Originally Racecar Driver, Johnny Rutherfords Coach.  Third owner.

I have a 1979 Newell needing work.  It is a 36 ft with a new 6v92 w/747ht half installed.  The coach is straight and the interior is original so needs upgrade.  Engine needs to be taken back out and rear axle ratio changed to taller gearset.  Bus was built with a 555 Cummins.  I have invested nearly $40K but will sell for what I paid for the Engine/transmission which was rebuilt by gm and has zero miles.   $8500. for the engine and the rest goes for free.  Generator runs fine, has driver entry door. Everything was working when the engine went out on Rt44 in Missouri.

We've decided to sell our Newell with a heavy heart.  Our work lives are so busy we have come to the conclusion that for now it probably makes most sense to sell this big part of our lives and step back.  However, we plan to step forward again someday closer to our retirement years into a newer Newell coach.  I have a list a mile long of things we have done and had done to this coach and I can honestly say that I just don't think there is anything left to do.  I have posted some pics here, but have many more.
$32,500
Features:

  • Engine: Detroit Diesel  8V92 with turbo charger
  • Length: 40 feet
  • 12.5 KW Generator with 2,090 hours
  • Every window has Zip Dee awnings that are in excellent shape
  • Sleeps 2-4 (maybe 6 if 4 are kiddos)
  • All 8D (4) batteries replaced within last 2 years
  • Air leveling system
  • 3 basement central air conditioners (services when I bought it and they run and cool really well)
  • Central Vacuum
  • Polished (thanks Tom & Clarke) Alcoa wheels
  • Refrigerator, stove, ice maker and convection oven microwave (all work just great).
  • Outside a gas grill mounts to the side of coach and there is a slide out freezer/refrigerator
  • Main fuel tank stretches from one side of the coach to the other.  The auxiliary fuel tank is half that size.  I think the fuel capacity is well over 300 gallons.
  • Xantrex Xpower Inverter 3000
  • Progressive Dynamics 9200 Series Inteli-Power converter
Upgrades/Repairs since 2012:
  • Rebuilt Engine in 2012 with 117,451  at a cost of $26,371.84
    • I have the engine serviced every year regardless of use by the Detroit Diesel dealer who has cared for it since I have owned it including the rebuild.  All the records are detailed and you are welcome to speak with the dealer.  In fact I encourage you to.
  • Engine bay was completely cleaned during the rebuild and all new insulation was installed ( the expensive stuff)
  • I put on brand new Goodyear tires the day I picked up the coach from the previous owner.  They have about 9,300 miles on them now and are date coded 2012
  • Upgraded backup camera, new color monitor and side cameras
  • All batteries have been replaced in last 2 years
  • New Cruise King cruise control in 2012
  • Added Main Awning (Zip Dee)
  • Added Digipanel (engine, transmission temperature monitor)
  • All windows have had slide seals replaced so windows slide like they're new.
  • Added Winegard satellite
  • Added new Kwikee step
  • Water Bay was completely rebuilt in 2014 and is now finished off with chrome plating and sealed.  The water heater was replaced at the same time.
  • Interior:
    • All walls were painted
    • Entire new bamboo floor
    • New drapes (blackout backing), blinds and valances
    • Brand new mattress (2015)
    • New electric heaters in coach
    • All interior lights converted to LED including dimmers in front and back bedroom

      • Updated sink faucet
      • New toilet (2015 never been used!)
      • New tile floor

I am producing conversion templates to enable Newell owners having Truck-lite 0708 size tail lights (stop, turn and backup) to convert to rubber mounted Super Bright LED units (RT-x24), Truck-Lite 4550/60 series, or Grote G4502/03 type LED rear lights. I am using my 1991, #277 as my test mule.

It appears the plates will be about $7.00 each, plus shipping with 5 needed for either side. Please advise me if you have any interest.

As soon as I have a set installed, I will have pictures available to send before you decide to to order.

Thanks!

Gang,

So we all know that we are supposed to drain our air tanks, right?  Well, on my coach there are two tanks that get water in them.  There is one in the front basement bay on curb side.  There is another one in front of drive wheels on curb side.  (The rest are really hard to get to).

Anyway the front one always seemed to have water in it and the petcock was tough to open with my fingers.  On top of that, if I *did* open it, the water sprayed all over the inside of the bay (holds the air compressor, and fan for genny).

What I did was carefully drain the water / air from the tank (with compressors turned off).

Next, I removed the petcock with an open end wrench.

I replaced the petcock with the following:

1 x male-male NPT 1/4" fitting
1 x NPT 1/4" ball valve
1 x NPT 1/4" to tube adapter
1 x piece of clear plastic tube
2 x clamps (one at top and one at bottom)

I used plumbers paste to seal the threads.

Finally, I drilled a hole through the bottom of the bay and stuck the tubing out....followed by a little clear silicone around the drilled hole.  I also put a clamp on the tube on the bottom end to keep the tube from ever jumping around when air is going through it.

Thats it!

Now, to drain the tank, all I have to do is grab the handle and turn.  Any water / air is expelled under the coach.  No more mess, and super easy to do without tools.

The picture will show you in more detail.

Easy project!

ps.  all the supplies are available at Home Depot.

Spotted what might have been a 2004 East bound on I--70 pulling a vehicle with what looked like an off road machine.  Rain and traffic obscured vision.  Sighting was about 4PM May 9, 2016
